Spain wins ‘in extremis’ to Hungary on the eve of the Eurobasket

A basket by Alba Torrens at 2” settles the first of the two duels against the Magyar team (63-65)

MADRID, 9 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish women’s basketball team won this Friday 63-65 against Hungary after a tight outcome and which was decided by a basket from forward Alba Torrens two seconds from the end, in their penultimate friendly commitment before the Eurobasket that will be played from June 15 to 25 in Israel and Slovenia.

In the first of their two straight matches against the Magyar team, the players coached by Miguel Méndez put their immaculate winning streak to the test away from home. However, in the city of Sopron, the rojigualdo team signed a worrying version and exhibited deficiencies that it had not shown in recent appointments.

That success by Torrens, scoring on the board after a penetration from the left side of his attack, put the culmination of a match of ups and downs and that had become complicated. Not surprisingly, the Spanish income at the end of the first period (14-20) vanished in the next (25-25), and even the Hungarians left at halftime 36-33 up.

A third period of low accumulated scoring (9-13) maintained the equality on the Novomatic Aréna court, according to a 45-46 that already provided for an outcome of small details to avoid overtime. In the final, although Hungary scored a three-pointer when the score was 60-63, the brilliance of Spain’s offensive beacon came to the fore.

Torrens, who missed the 2019 Eurobasket due to injury and the 2021 Eurobasket due to covid, sharpened his aim when it was most needed and gave the victory to Méndez’s team with his final basket. In a play after the desperate one, to use up the remaining two seconds, Cristina Ouviña blocked the opponent’s shot attempt from the triple.

The Magyar team will have their chance for revenge this Saturday, starting at 5:00 p.m. and on the same stage. The Sopron pavilion, thus, will issue a ruling on how Méndez’s team adjusts its plans less than a week before the start of the continental tournament.
