The Spanish team finished the year 2021 seventh in the FIFA rankings, a world ranking led by Belgium for the fourth consecutive year, with Brazil and France completing the podium.
The ‘Canarinha’ only places two points below the Belgian team, while the French remain third after proclaiming themselves champions of the League of Nations this year. In fourth position is England, followed by Argentina (5th) and Italy (6th), champions of the America’s Cup and the European Championship, and which this year have considerably increased their points record (+108.51 and +115.77) compared to as of December 2020.
The following selections are, the aforementioned Spain, Portugal, Denmark and the Netherlands, which maintain their positions in relation to the last ranking prepared by the body.
In 2021, 1,116 international matches were played, well above the 352 that were played in 2020, a year marked by the coronavirus pandemic, one of the lowest numbers of matches between teams in a calendar year since 1987, when there were 323.
The FIFA rankings will be relevant to the World Cup draw to be held in Qatar in 2022, as the top seven ranked, as well as Qatar as host, will be in Pot 1 of the group leaders.
