Sofia Kenin named best WTA player in 2020

Sofía Kenin, 22-year-old American and world number 4, was named this Tuesday as the best player in the WTA in 2020, according to the votes of the international media. The tennis player born circumstantially in Moscow was champion of the Australian Open (she won the Spanish Garbiñe Muguruza in the final) and finalist at Roland Garros (she fell to the Polish Iga Swiatek, chosen as a Favorite of the Fans this year and Revelation).

Kenin becomes the eighth American to win the honor of WTA Player of the Year since the election began in 1977, after Serena Williams (7 times), Martina Navratilova (7), Lindsay Davenport (2), Tracy Austin, Chris Evert, Venus Williams and Jennifer Capriati.

Sofia was one of only two players who was able to reach the second week of the three Grand Slam in 2020 (along with Petra Kvitova) and finished the year in the rankings as the highest-ranked American.

Other WTA awards they honor the Polish Magda Linette, for executing the best shot of the year, a passing drive in the race against Shuai Peng in Hua Hin; Simona Halep and Elena Rybakina for playing the best game of the year in Dubai; Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic as best doubles pair; to Maria Bouzkova for her Sportsmanship; to Victoria Azarenka for starring in Best Comeback; Nadia Podoroska, as Best Newcomer; and the WTA Players Council.
