Sainz leads FP2 at Silverstone ahead of Hamilton and Norris

MADRID, 1 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish driver Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) was the fastest in the second free practice session of the Formula 1 British Grand Prix, ahead of Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Lando Norris (McLaren), second and third, respectively , while Fernando Alonso has completed the sixth fastest time.

While the heavy rain was the main protagonist in the first contact at Silverstone, conditions that caused the red flag for Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) in the first hour of practice on the English track, in the second free practice session Carlos Sainz he set the fastest time of the day, the only one under 1:29.00 with 1:28.942 to lead the second free practice of the day.

With many teams testing novelties on the English track, Hamilton, eight-time winner of the British GP, was the second fastest driver in the session thanks to his 1:29.105, with Lando Norris -the most active with 29 laps along with Russel, Bottas, Tsunoda and Schumacher- completing the podium (1:29.118), to close a surprising first three positions, with Red Bull very far from the head and the good ‘qualifier’ Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) in fifth place with 1 :29.404, in a good day for the Italian team.

Fernando Alonso (Alpine) finished the day behind the Monegasque, with the sixth fastest time (1:29.625) seven tenths behind Sainz and suffering too much from the ‘porpoising’. The Red Bull of Verstappen and Pérez starred in the surprise for the worse of the day. The Dutchman was fourth, two tenths off the session leader (1:29.149), while the Mexican could only set the seventh fastest time with 1:29.753, showing that there is still much to be seen in a session with somewhat messy times that they seem to be a reference for qualifying and the race.

Albon, Sainz or Norris were the riders who ran with the most paraffin in the session, with the intention of knowing first-hand how the novelties behaved for this Grand Prix. In a second session in which all the teams were more active thanks to the fact that the rain disappeared, with Russel, Ricciardo and Stroll – the protagonist in the first session for causing a red flag by skating through the water – closing the top 10.

Thus, the second round was another world, after the first three drivers in the first hour on the Silverstone asphalt were Valtteri Bottas with his Alfa Romeo and a 1:42.249, with the local idol Lewis Hamilton second and the Spaniard from Ferrari Carlos Sainz third, at 0.5 and 0.7 seconds respectively.
