Roberto Mancini resigns as Italy coach

Italian coach Roberto Mancini has resigned as Italy’s soccer coach, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed this Sunday, thus ending a period of more than five years in office.

“The Italian Football Federation communicates that it has taken note of Roberto Mancini’s resignation as coach of the Italian team, received late yesterday afternoon,” the federative body said in a statement.

The 58-year-old Iesi coach took command of the ‘Azzurra’ in May 2018, and in 2021 he led the team to win Euro 2020, postponed one year due to the coronavirus. The last games led by him were in the ‘Final Four’ of the League of Nations, the defeat against Spain in the semifinals (2-1) and the victory for third place against the Netherlands (2-3).

The FIGC has assured that, “taking into account the important upcoming commitments of the qualifiers for the Eurocopa 2024” -on September 10 and 12 against North Macedonia and Ukraine, it will announce the name of the new national coach “in the coming days”.
