Reactions to the College Football Playoff Rankings: Ole Miss is underrated and Tennessee is overrated in the updated top 25

The 2023 college football season is almost over, and the competition for the College Football Playoff was intensifying.

Tuesday saw the announcement of the College Football Playoff Decision Committee’s rankings, with Washington surpassing Florida State at No. 4 to take the top spot.

The Seminoles easily defeated North Alabama on Saturday, but in the first quarter, starting quarterback turned Heisman Trophy candidate Jordan Travis went down with a season-ending leg injury.

In addition to their victories over No. 6 Oregon at home and No. 15 Arizona on the road, Washington now had three victories over teams ranked in the current rankings when the Huskies were defeating No. 16 Oregon State off the road in Corvallis.

Compared to Florida State, which has only two victories over ranked teams—a neutral-site victory against No. 14 LSU to start the season then an overtime victory at No. 24 Clemson—Washington’s CV is significantly stronger.

It’s okay for Washington to surge ahead of Florida State. It’s actually suitable. Granted, FSU supporters are undoubtedly incensed about it, but for the Seminoles in particular, the painting is still unfinished.

With Tate Rodemaker behind center, we are unsure of the true nature of this Florida State team.

He might be the next Cardale Jones, who as a third-string player guided Ohio State to the championship in 2014.

There’s no reason for maintaining the Seminoles ahead over a Washington team that has won all of its games, despite occasionally unpleasant results, and has a stronger CV on paper without that knowledge.

A slate of games leading up to Championship Week will help settle scores before Selection Sunday.

The penultimate College Football Playoff rankings were released, with the expected outcome among the top four.

As expected, Georgia remained atop the rankings in the most recent poll, while Michigan rose to No. 2, which had been occupied by an Ohio State squad that Georgia soundly thrashed. In addition, TCU rose to third place prior to the Big 12 Championship Game.

And this week, there was a new face among the top four as USC used its victory over Notre Dame along the other rankings movement to secure the final No. 4 spot ahead of the Pac-12 title game.

The biggest story to come out of the release of the third edition in the College Football Playoff Rankings in the 2023 season on Tuesday was a shift at the top of the standings.

After a convincing victory over Ole Miss, Georgia moved up to the top and demotionally dropped Ohio State to No. 2. Washington, Michigan, and Florida State completed the top five.

A single defeat Oregon entered at No. 6, hoping for a chance at vengeance in a Pac-12 Championship Game rematch with Washington. Rounding out the top 10 were Texas, Alabama, Missouri, and Louisville, in that order.

Tulane is now ranked No. 24 by the selection committee, which puts the Green Wave in the lead for a Group of Five spot in the New Year’s Six.

With two games remaining in the regular season, there are still a lot of clubs that are lingering in the bottom of the rankings.
