Ralf Schumacher on his nephew Mick: “As a Mercedes reserve driver, everyone wins”

MUNICH (GERMANY), 26 Dec. (dpa/EP) –

Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher celebrated the arrival of his nephew Mick at Mercedes as a reserve driver for 2023, “a great opportunity” to “continue learning a lot” and in which all parties “win”.

“Mick will be able to follow the work of a leading team and learn a lot. It’s a great opportunity. For the team and for Mick, it’s a win-win situation,” Ralf Schumacher said in an interview with the Sport1 channel published this Monday. .

After two years driving for Haas, where he made his debut in Formula 1, Mick Schumacher did not continue with the team, which replaced him with the German Nico Hülkenberg. Thus, next season the son of the eight-time world champion will become a reserve driver at Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell as main drivers.

“Another season as main driver would have been better, of course. However, he lacked the necessary support at Haas, it would have been difficult for him,” acknowledged Ralf Schumacher, who noted that his nephew will have interesting opportunities in 2024. “Mercedes also has associated teams, where he can have influence,” he said, referring to McLaren, Aston Martin and Williams.
