Quique Setién, new coach of Villarreal

MADRID, 25 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Villarreal confirmed on Tuesday that Quique Setién has become their new coach for the remainder of the season and one more, filling the gap left by Unai Emery, who has headed to English Aston Villa.

“Villarreal CF has reached an agreement with Quique Setién for the Santander coach to lead the ‘groguet’ team for the remainder of this season and one more. The Cantabrian coach will lead his first session in charge of the team tomorrow, Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m. hours and will be presented at 1:30 p.m. at a press conference aimed exclusively at the media to be held in the press room of the José Manuel Llaneza Sports City,” the Castellón club said on its website.

In this way, the ‘Yellow Submarine’ opts for Setién to replace Emery, who this Monday decided to unilaterally terminate his contract after Aston Villa’s offer. The 64-year-old Spanish coach thus returns to the bench after his time at FC Barcelona, which he directed between January and August 2020 and from which he was dismissed after the 2-8 loss in the Champions League against him German Bayern Munich.

In addition to directing the Catalan team, the Cantabrian coach also accumulates experience in other First Division benches such as Real Betis and UD Las Palmas, where he left the hallmark of his football philosophy. He will be accompanied in this new adventure by Ramiro Amarelle, as assistant coach, and by Fran Soto, as physical trainer.

Villarreal stressed that the player from Santander “is a coach with a long history and experience in Spanish football after having managed historical teams on the national scene” and recalled that “he is distinguished by his proposal for good football and combination play that he has displayed in the teams that he has coached throughout his extensive top-level career”.
