Pablo Carreño, in the footsteps of David Ferrer

Among the milestones and curiosities of the feat that Pablo Carreño starred in when qualifying for the semifinals of the US Open, something that has happened very few times in the history of Spanish tennis stands out since Rafa Nadal started competing in the Grand Slams continuously at Wimbledon 2003. It was seven years since no other Spaniard reached the penultimate round of a major without the Balearic.

The last one who achieved the same as Carreño in this 2020 was David Ferrer at the 2013 Australian Open, in which Nadal did not participate. In 2012, the one from Jávea had already achieved it in a US Open that the multi-champion did not attend either. On both occasions, the one who was number three in the world was removed from the final by Novak Djokovic.

In the 2014 New York tournament and the 2016 Wimbledon tournament, not played by Rafa, there were no semi-finalists from the Navy. Nor in the other absences of the world number two (Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2004).
