Ons Jabeur withdraws due to injury at the Mutua Madrid Open

MADRID, 24 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur, current number four in the world, will not finally be able to play the Mutua Madrid Open, a WTA 1000 category tournament that starts this Tuesday and where she was the defending champion, due to a muscle injury.

The 28-year-old African player arrived in Madrid after having to leave last week in her semifinal match in Stuttgart (Germany) against the Polish Iga Swiatek, and this Monday she confirmed that she will not be playing on the red clay of the Magic Box.

In a statement on social networks, Jabeur, who despite everything this Monday attended the presentation of the tournament together with the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, champion in 2022 of the Masters 1000, indicated that after undergoing “more medical examinations”, he had been detected “a small tear” in the calf and that he would need “more time” to recover.

“I will not be able to compete and defend my title this year at the Mutua Madrid Open. I would like to wish everyone and the tournament a great event and I am already looking forward to coming back next year”, added the Tunisian player, who in 2022 made history in the capital.
