Miguel Méndez: “We wanted rivals with the maximum possible potential”

MADRID, 24 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The women’s national basketball coach, Miguel Méndez, was expectant with the start of the friendly matches with a view to the Eurobasket this summer, against Italy on Thursday and China on Friday, two “rivals with the greatest possible potential.”

“We reached this point having met the objective of this week and a half. We came with nine players who played in the final of the Endesa Women’s League. An important physical and mental load. We have been able to do a ‘detox’ process and then we have risen little the load little by little”, he said in statements provided by the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), collected by Europa Press.

The Galician coach is confident that the work of the concentration in Vigo will be seen in the match against Italy this Thursday at Complexo Deportivo As Travesas. “We arrived at these first matches where all of that has to be put on the field and continue with the preparation for this European Championship,” he commented.

“They are two very important rivals, we asked for that when the sports director spoke to us. We wanted rivals with the maximum possible potential. Italy is a young team but with a lot of experience. A very physical team, with a very tough defense, with a top-level player like Cecilia Zandalasini”, he added.

Méndez explained that he will take advantage of the two games for defense tests above all. “We will go to the two games with different defensive plans, put things on the field that can give us information for the future. Without tying ourselves to what our rivals offer us, with the idea of trying to compete to win. We will put things that we may need in Tel Aviv and in Slovenia,” he concluded.
