Michigan promotes Sherrone Moore; the Wolverines make Moore offensive coordinator to take over as coach from Jim Harbaugh.
The school announced on Friday that Sherrone Moore, who was Michigan’s offensive coordinator, has been promoted to head coach the team after Jim Harbaugh left to join the Los Angeles Chargers.
Moore worked for Michigan for six years as a staff member, and he was the team’s acting head coach for four games in 2023 while Harbaugh was suspended twice.
“I have been ready my entire coaching journey for this opportunity and we can’t think of a better place for a head coach than that the University of Michigan,” Moore stated in a press release.
Michigan has a history of winning football games for 144 years, and we will do all that we can every day as an entire TEAM to keep that going. We won’t change our rules.
We will be a championship-level team that is smart, tough, reliable, relentless, and full of energy. We love football and play with love for the game, a winged helmet, and each other.
On and off the field, in the classroom, and in our communities, we will also keep doing our best. I’m excited to spend time with our players, coaches, and staff in my new job.
The move shows that Michigan wants stability during an unfavorable coaching change. Even though the Wolverines just won their first national crown since 1997, several of their best players are already leaving for the draft in the NFL.
Moore is a respected staffer veteran and an emotional leader. If Michigan promotes him, they might be able to keep talented players from leaving for other schools.
Moore became a well-known face or voice for the team in 2023 when he took charge on the sidelines in November while Harbaugh was suspended for three games because of the sign-stealing scandal.
Moore became better known across the country after his emotional interview on the field after Michigan beat Penn State.
“Sherrone has shown to be a great leader to our football scheme, especially for the offensive line or players on the offensive end of the football,” athletics director Warde Manuel stated.
“He proves to be a dynamic, fierce, and competitive person who helps his players do their best.” People who play for him love being in the building with him every day.
Moore, who is 37 years old, played offensive line over Oklahoma under Bob Stoops. From 2009 to 2013, he was a coach at Louisville under Steve Kragthorpe as well as Charlie Strong.
Since then, he’s worked in Michigan. From 2014 to 2017, Moore served as tight ends coach at Central Michigan. In 2018, he took the same job at Michigan.
In 2021, he was named co-offensive coordinator. In 2023, he became the only offensive coordinator.
He has also been in charge of a great offensive line for the past three years, which helped Michigan win back-to-back Joe Maguire Awards in 2021 as well as 2022.
Michigan chose Sherrone Moore as its new coach on Friday, replacing Jim Harbaugh. Moore, who is 37 years old and is currently the offensive coordinator, will be in charge of college football’s most successful team.
The deal was made by the school two days shortly after Harbaugh left to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. He will have five years to try to win a Super Bowl.
Moore had a 4-0 record, with wins across Ohio State as well as Penn State. He filled in for Harbaugh while he was suspended twice for possible NCAA rules violations in 2023.
Before taking down Washington over the national title last month, Harbaugh told his team, “You’ve already caught a glimpse into the shining star that he is.” “He’s just phenomenal, and he works so hard at it.”
Under Moore, Michigan’s offensive guard has been one of the best in the country. This has helped the school regain its glory, as shown by its national title or three straight Big Ten titles.
Moore became Moore’s assistant coach for tight ends in 2018 after Dan Enos suggested him. Enos worked for Harbaugh for about six weeks shortly after he arrived in 2017 before leaving to become an assistant coach at Alabama.
Moore was made offensive line coach or co-offensive coordinator in 2021, the year the Wolverines came back from a 2-4 season that was cut short by a pandemic.
Sherrie Moore, who was Michigan’s offensive coordinator as well as offensive line coach on the 2023 national champion team, has been officially named Jim Harbaugh’s replacement. He will be the 21st coach in the school’s history.
Warde Manuel, the athletic director at Michigan, said in a statement, “Sherrone has proven that he’s a great leader of our football scheme, especially for the offensive line and players upon the receiving end of the football.”
“He is a dynamic, fierce, and competitive person who helps his players do their best.” People who play for him love being in the building with him every day. The school told everyone about the hire on Friday night.
