It’s not just any day for fashion lovers. Like every May, the Met Gala is celebrated on the first Monday, the great event that brings together hundreds of celebrities at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Guests, as always, will adapt to a very strict dress code, combining elegance, extravagance, originality and luxury.
Latinos Jennifer López and Bad Bunny will host this edition, whose theme will be Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, which is also the title of the next exhibition at the Costume Institute. Curator Andrew Bolton announced that 50 of the pieces with the greatest historical and aesthetic value in the collection will be exhibited. In his words, they are “the sleeping beauties.” Among them will be the Elizabethan bodice and silk satin dress by American couturier Charles Frederick Worth.
On the other hand, some 250 garments and accessories spanning four centuries will be on display, visually connected by themes related to nature. The emphasis on sustainability and new forms of production, based on craftsmanship and natural techniques, will be represented by pieces acquired from creators such as Phillip Lim, Stella McCartney and Connor Ives. Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior and Hubert de Givenchy will also feature among the designs. The exhibition will be open from May 10 to September 2.
In this sense, the dress code for the Met Gala 2024 is The garden of time. The organization reported that the inspiration comes from a story written in 1962 by the English science fiction writer, JG Ballard. Although little else is known about the dress code – this type of event also stands out for its ambiguous and mysterious character, giving rise to the imagination in the wardrobe of each guest -, everything indicates that the term ‘garden’ derives from outfits with references natural, floral and even dreamlike.
Along with Jennifer López, Zendaya, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth. The four are joined by Jonathan Anderson, creative director of the Spanish firm Loewe, and Shou Zi Chew, executive director of the TikTok platform, as honorary hosts. Everyone will accompany Anna Wintour to receive the rest of the guests who will parade on the red carpet of the New York museum.
The Met Gala is one of the biggest events in pop culture. Its iconographic power has been reinforced in this Internet era. TikTok is the official sponsor of this edition. However, the main source of revenue for the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Last year it raised a record $22 million. It is the millionaires’ party and a meeting point between the big names from the world of music, cinema, television, politics, culture, sports, technology, networks and fashion.
