Martín de la Puente struggles past the first round at the US Open

MADRID, 6 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Martín de la Puente qualified this Tuesday for the quarterfinals of the wheelchair tournament of the United States Open, fourth ‘Grand Slam’ of the season, after defeating the Japanese Takashi Sanada in three sets (6 -0, 6-7, 6-4).

The Galician player, fourth seeded and champion in New York last year in doubles together with Frenchman Nicolas Peifer, had a hard debut at Flushing Meadows against the ninth in the world ranking and who recovered from the forceful ‘rosco’ who conceded from from Vigo, who from then on met with a lot of resistance.

Sanada reacted and had a 5-4 advantage and service, but the Spaniard managed to break and force a ‘sudden death’ that went to the Asian (7/5). In the third and final set, De la Puente took a quick lead with two breaks, enough to close his pass to the quarterfinals, despite the resistance of his rival, where he will face the British Gordon Reid, seven in the world.
