Mariona Caldentey: “If I say what I think they still sanction me”

“We could have done things better, but you’re left with a silly face”

MADRID, 21 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The FC Barcelona international Mariona Caldentey showed her dissatisfaction with the arbitration decision after falling (2-1) in the quarterfinals of the European Championship against England, a match where the hosts tied after a controversial action with an elbow to Irene Paredes.

“If I say what I think, they still sanction me because these games are details. They elbow Irene in the face, it’s a goal. Then they whistle the game in a corner. It’s mad because you put it all, you try and against that you can’t do nothing. We could have done things better, but you’re left with a stupid face”, said Caldentey at the end of the match.

Caldentey highlighted the work of the national team, who had their chances of going to the semifinals. “We have competed and they have very good players whom we have totally minimized. But this is football and they pass and we don’t”, he pointed out.

The Spanish team led the game until the 84th minute, when Toone made it 1-1 and forced extra time, which tipped the balance in favor of the English team with a shot by Stanway from outside the area to make it 2-1 in the minute 96.

“Right now it is difficult to be positive and try to see the good things. We are a young team, we will try again for sure. These are difficult days, we had high hopes for this European Championship and this match. It is a tough stick”, he concluded.
