Años después, Maradona en su biografía 'Yo Soy el Diego', escribió: “Ahora sí puedo contar lo que en aquel momento no podía, lo que en aquel momento definí como «La mano de Dios»… Qué mano de Dios, ¡fue la mano del Diego! Y fue como robarle la billetera a los ingleses”. Shilton, aún ensimismado con Maradona, no le perdona por la afrenta ni 33 años después. Sin reuniones, ni saludos entre ambos, nunca jamás. Hasta que el infierno se congele. Entre tanto, la Mano de Dios es un mito. Venerada en Argentina, musicalizada por Rodrigo, inmortalizada en pósters, collages, graffitis y en la imborrable fotografía de Bob Thomas, de la agencia Getty Images. Memoria colectiva de un país que le excusa, por supuesto, el atentado ético. El mundo, empero, sí perdonó 'la picardía'. “Borró todo aquello con su genialidad”, describió Archie Macpherson, periodista de la BBC presente en el encuentro.

Pero después de aquel gol, a Maradona aún le quedaba magia para, cuatro minutos después, marcar el denominado 'Gol del Siglo', el mejor gol de la historia de los mundiales. Diego partió desde su propio campo y dejó atrás a seis jugadores ingleses (Glenn Hoddle, Peter Reid, Kenny Sansom, Terry Butcher, Terry Fenwick y al arquero Shilton) antes de rematar y convertir el tanto que le daría a Argentina la clasificación a semifinales. “Cuando Diego marcó el segundo gol contra nosotros me dieron ganas de aplaudir. Nunca había sentido nada parecido, pero es verdad. Es el mejor jugador de todos los tiempos con diferencia. Un fenómeno único”, recuerda Gary Lineker, que marcó el descuento para Inglaterra. El partido contra Bélgica fue un mero trámite para acceder a la final. La selección argentina se impuso sin mucho problema con dos goles de un Maradona imparable y afrontaba la final contra Alemania Federal el 29 de junio con la dura estadística de no haber conseguido ganarles nunca antes en un Mundial. Brown abrió el marcador de forma heroica (tenía un hombro luxado), Valdano amplió la ventaja, pero Völler Y Rummenigge empataron el partido y quedaba todo por resolverse a diez minutos del final. Y ahí fue cuando apareció Maradona, que le metió una asistencia imposible a Burruchaga para marcar el 3-2 definitivo en el marcador y darle la segunda copa mundial a Argentina, la primera para un Diego que salió del Azteca a hombros entre una gran multitud y con el cartel de mejor jugador del torneo. Una imagen que se convertiría en una de las más icónicas de la historia del fútbol.

Carlos Salvador Bilardo creía que su binomio con Diego Armando Maradona podría crear en LaLiga un milagro todavía mayor al que ambos protagonizaron para Argentina con México-86. Por eso, 'El Narigón' insistió en 1992 en el fichaje de su compatriota, justo después de que éste cayera a los infiernos de Nápoles cuando el doping le cazó inevitablemente por consumo de cocaína y sufrió una dura sanción por ello. Pasada la treintena, aquel futbolista que fue imparable intentaría resucitar su mejor versión de regreso a LaLiga, donde ya había militado con el Barcelona temporadas antes de convertirse en el ídolo de San Paolo.

Hasta el entonces secretario general de la FIFA, Joseph Blatter, intervino para que Maradona acabara en Nervión después de muchas negociaciones, al principio fallidas, que protagonizó el presidente sevillista Luis Cuervas. Diego llegó y Bilardo soñó con que 'El Pelusa' sería “el hombre que llevaría al Sevilla a la gloria” en un equipo que contaba con dos cracks de la talla de Diego Simeone Y Davor Suker, que acabarían posteriormente en Atlético Y Real Madrid; con internacionales como Diego Rodríguez, Manolo Jiménez o Rafa Paz y hasta con Monchi, el actual director deportivo sevillista, como uno de sus porteros.

La aventura maradoniana no pudo comenzar mejor, con 'El Pelusa' hecho una sílfide, cuentan las crónicas de la época que llegó a perder hasta 10 kilos. Diego, de penalti, marcó el gol con el que el equipo blanquirrojo derrotó en Nervión al Zaragoza a principios de octubre. El partido sin embargo, será recordado por un momento que define mejor que ningún otro la estancia del astro de Villa Fiorito en la capital del Guadalquivir. Antes de un córner, alguien de la grada lanzó una pelota de papel de plata. El argentino tomó la bolita y empezó a hacer malabarismos con ella, ajeno durante segundos al devenir del partido. Nervión alucinaba.

Hubo euforia en los inicios, buen fútbol y puestos europeos durante algunos meses y decepción mayúscula al final de temporada, después de varios encontronazos entre el club y el divo, que en febrero fue convocado por Argentina tras cumplir su sanción para unos amistosos ante Brasil y Dinamarca. El Sevilla no quería dejarle marchar al encuentro ante los nórdicos pero Maradona hizo caso omiso y se escapó, arrastrando en su huida por cierto a su compatriota un joven Simeone. El club expedientó a ambos y la relación nunca fue ya la misma. Diego engordó, aparecía cada vez menos por los entrenamientos. El Sevilla le llegó a poner hasta un investigador privado para que destapara, la cabra tira al monte, no pocas andanzas del 10 en la noche hispalense. Muchas de ellas permanecen aún bajo la llave de secreto.

Un empate ante el Burgos (1-1) fue su último encuentro en el Sánchez Pizjuán. Maradona se machó a comienzos de la segunda mitad mientras maldecía a Bilardo. Había metido cinco goles. El club de Nervión terminó séptimo, sin Europa y por supuesto sin ese título en el que había confiado tanto Bilardo. Pero el Sevilla, Monchi lo reconoce muchas veces, puede presumir de haber tenido en sus filas al “genio del fútbol mundial”.

Tras el subcampeonato del mundo con Argentina en el 90, la suspensión por doping y su fallida etapa en Sevilla, Maradona regresó al fútbol argentino para vestir la camiseta de Newell's, un periodo corto, pero intenso para el '10' que se declararía “leproso de por vida”. En principio estaba todo cerrado para su vuelta a Argentinos Juniors, pero fue amenazado por un grupo de barras bravas de La Paternal y finalmente terminó en Rosario. El 13 de septiembre de 1993, Diego se entrenó por primera vez con Newell's ante la atenta mirada de 40.000 personas. Su debut oficial sería el 10 de octubre en la derrota contra Independiente. Después, jugó contra Belgrano, Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, Boca Y Huracán, pero en este último partido, en diciembre de 1993, sufrió un desgarro muscular que le alejó varias semanas del terreno de juego. Solari dejó de ser el entrenador del conjunto rosarino y su relación con el nuevo DT, Jorge Castelli, precipitó la salida de Maradona del equipo tras haber disputado tan sólo cinco partidos y sin goles anotados.

'El Pelusa' estaba de capa caída y tras su marcha de Newell's, cansado de persecuciones mediáticas, agredió con un rifle de aire comprimido a un grupo de fotógrafos que hacían guardia en la puerta de su casa, hecho por el que fue condenado a dos años de prisión en suspenso y a indemnizar a los periodistas agredidos. Maradona fue condenado a quince meses de suspensión por no pasar un control antidopaje durante el Mundial de 1994, en el que Argentina fue eliminada en octavos por Rumanía, y decidió dedicarse a ser entrenador. Su debut como técnico fue en Deportivo Mandiyú, donde únicamente logró una victoria en 12 partidos dirigidos. Después, Racing de Avellaneda lo contrató para tratar de ganar el torneo local, algo que no ocurría desde 1966. Su estancia en la Academia también fue muy corta, cuatro meses en los que obtuvo dos victorias, 6 empates y 3 derrotas en 11 encuentros.

El gran sueño de Maradona era dirigir a Boca, pero tras terminar su sanción tuvo que conformarse con volver a ser jugador xeneize. El 30 de septiembre de 1995, Diego Armando volvió a vestir la azul y oro en la victoria ante Corea del Sur. Boca no pudo realizar una buena actuación en el Apertura 1995 Y Mauricio Macri fue elegido nuevo presidente en 1996, con quien 'El Pelusa' tendría diferencias en el futuro. Marzolini abandonó el banquillo y Carlos Bilardo era el nuevo técnico xeneize. Su pelea con Diego en Sevilla pesaba mucho y este amenazó con marcharse si asumía el cargo. Finalmente, decidió apoyarlo.

El 14 de julio de 1996, se produciría una de las imágenes más icónicas del paso de Maradona por Boca Juniors. Una Bombonera a reventar acogía un nuevo Superclásico contra River Plate. El Millonario atravesaba uno de sus mejores momentos: se había consagrado campeón de la Copa Libertadores tras vencer a América de Cali y venía a por todas en el torneo local, además de la Copa Intercontinental, que acabaría perdiendo por 1-0 frente a la Juventus con un gol de Alessandro Del Piero. Burgos, Díaz, Ayala, Astrada y Francescoli encabezaban aquel conjunto millonario que ya contaba con Marcelo Gallardo en sus filas. La victoria fue xeneize por 4-1 con Claudio Caniggia como estrella con tres de los cuatro goles. El primer tanto, obra de Basualdo, desató la pasión en la cancha de Boca. La Bombonera enloqueció y con ella los jugadores. Maradona y Caniggia decidieron darse un apasionado beso, el 'Beso del Alma', que ocupó las portadas de todos los diarios nacionales y que dio la vuelta al mundo.

Boca peleó por el título, pero una derrota contra Racing, en la que Maradona falló un penalti, les dejó sin opciones en un torneo que terminaría ganando Lanús. En esa época, Diego estaba en plena lucha contra su adicción a las drogas. De hecho, protagonizó una campaña del gobierno argentino: “La campaña ‘Sol sin drogas’ la hago por los chicos. La droga existe en todos lados y yo no quiero que la agarren los pibes. Tengo dos nenas y me pareció que era bueno decir todo esto, una obligación de padre… Fui, soy y seré drogadicto”, confesó. 'El Pelusa' decidió retirarse un tiempo de las canchas y seguir tratándose para salir del pozo. El 7 de abril de 1997 fue ingresado después de sufrir un problema de presión sanguínea durante la grabación de un programa de televisión y estuvo varios meses en recuperación.

El 9 de julio, aparentemente recuperado, volvió a vestirse de corto y disputó el Boca-Newell’s. Apenas mes y medio después, dio positivo en benzoitilecgonina y metilecgonina, metabolitos de la cocaína, tras un enfrentamiento con Argentinos Juniors y la AFA lo suspendió provisionalmente hasta obtener los resultados de la contraprueba. Diego luchó contra viento y marea por defender su honor. Él esta limpio y quería que la verdad saliera a la luz. Durante el mes de julio, el astro argentino había denunciado unas llamadas en las que le amenazaban con colocarle droga y el juez ordenó la retirada de la suspensión de la AFA hasta que se realizara una prueba de ADN en la orina analizada para comprobar que realmente era de Maradona. De este modo, Diego pudo seguir compitiendo, pero debía hacerse un control antidopaje obligatorio 24 horas antes de cada partido. La cantidad de material genético que se encontró en las muestras de la AFA era ínfimo, por lo que el estudio de ADN no pudo ser completado y el jugador quedó absuelto, pero ya estaba muy quemado y barruntaba la idea de retirarse.

Diego Armando Maradona disputó su último partido de fútbol el 25 de octubre de 1997 y lo hizo de la mejor manera posible: ganando el Superclásico a River Plate a domicilio. Sus hazañas fuera del campo después de esa retirada, con su adicción a la cocaína, su sobrepeso y un peligroso estado de salud que hizo peligrar incluso su vida estarían por llegar, pero el legado del DIEZ, con mayúsculas como no podía ser de otra forma, era ya imborrable sobre un campo de fútbol.

El último partido de Maradona, días antes de cumplir 37, fue en un estadio Monumental a reventar que no dejó de insultar al mejor jugador de su rival acérrimo. Algo que nunca sirvió para achantarle. Prueba de ello fue que, pese a ser sustituido en el descanso, Maradona salió al campo a dedicarle varios gestos obscenos a la afición de River Plate tras la victoria xeneize en territorio enemigo. Ya en la rueda de prensa posterior, prosiguió afirmando que “Boca jugó a lo Boca y River jugó a lo River. Ellos hicieron un gran primer tiempo pero en el segundo se les cayó la bombacha”, dijo el siempre desafiante argentino.

Cierto que no fue su mejor actuación. De hecho, fue el propio 'Barrilete Cósmico' quien decidió ser sustituido tras la primera mitad en la que ingresaron otros dos mitos -que, eso sí, nunca llegaron a rozar su aura- del conjunto bonaerense: Claudio Caniggia y Juan Román Riquelme. Pero su mal estado de forma y la eterna sombra del dopaje, tras dar positivo en cocaína dos meses antes, le ayudaron a tomar la decisión. “Con todo el dolor del alma ha llegado el momento de anunciar mi retiro. Se terminó el jugador de fútbol. Nadie está más triste que yo. Mi papá se fue llorando de mi casa y yo le prometí que cuando pasara una cosa así, largaba todo”, afirmó el considerado por muchos como mejor jugador que ha pasado por un campo de fútbol.

El partido en sí se lo llevó Boca en la segunda parte, remontando el tanto inicial de Sergio Berti gracias a los goles de Martín Palermo Y Julio Toresani, dando la alegría a Boca de ir durante meses con la cabeza alta por las calles bonaerenses en una de las rivalidades más grandes que existen en el balompié. Un 25 de octubre de 1997 se fue -seguramente- la mejor zurda que ha visto el mundo. Se retiró el futbolista pero su leyenda perdurará en los libros de historia. Diego Armando Maradona dijo adiós con 35 goles y 27 asistencias en 71 partidos con la camiseta azul y oro. No fue su época más destacada, pero la hinchada xeneize siempre lo recordará como el mejor jugador que ha vestido sus colores.

Cuatro años y diversos escándalos después (Diego fue internado en varias ocasiones por sus adicciones y problemas de salud y protagonizó polémicas personales), Maradona tuvo su partido homenaje en Boca Juniors. El 10 de noviembre de 2001 se reunieron en La Bombonera grandes figuras del fútbol mundial para despedir para siempre al ídolo xeneize. Pelé, Enzo Francescoli, 'Pibe' Valderrama, René Higuita, Éric Cantona, Davor Šuker, Hristo Stoichkov, Óscar Córdoba, el 'Patrón' Bermúdez o 'Chicho' Serna entre otros, integraron dos equipos dirigidos por Marcelo Bielsa y el 'Coco' Basile. Maradona usó la camiseta de Argentina, aunque terminó jugando con la de Boca. En un emotivo discurso final en el que no pudo evitar las lágrimas, Diego mostró su lado más humano y pronunció unas palabras que dejaron mudo al mundo del fútbol: “El fútbol es el deporte más lindo y más sano del mundo. De eso que no le quepa la menor duda a nadie. Porque que se equivoque uno… eso no tiene por qué pagarlo el fútbol. Yo me equivoqué y pagué. Pero, la pelota… la pelota no se mancha…”.

Durante la década de los 2000, Maradona tuvo que lidiar con todo tipo de situaciones. Continuó luchando contra su adicción a las drogas y fue ingresado en diversas ocasiones a causa de la cocaína, el alcohol y problemas de salud derivados de sus excesos. Su vida personal cada día era más complicada e incluso se convirtió en presentador de televisión. Diego presentaba constantes cambios físicos que suscitaban todo tipo de comentarios entre sus detractores y defensores, que se mostraban preocupados por la salud de su ídolo.

Cuando pareció dejar atrás todos esos fantasmas que le atormentaban, Maradona volvió a Boca en calidad de vicepresidente del Consejo de Fútbol (junio de 2005 a agosto de 2006). Durante su estancia en La Ribera, solicitó la designación de Alfio Basile como entrenador. En esa etapa, el Xeneize logró cinco títulos: dos de Primera División (2005 y 2006), las Recopas Sudamericanas de 2005 y 2006 y la Copa Sudamericana de 2005. El aficionado de Boca siempre le estará agradecido a Maradona por la sugerencia de contratar al 'Coco' y brindarle uno de sus años más exitosos. Su marcha del club argentino volvió a sumirle en un bucle de autodestrucción con nuevos ingresos y hasta se llegó a especular con su muerte en 2007. Sin embargo, una vez más, 'El Pelusa' resurgió de sus cenizas como el Ave Fénix y se puso ante el reto más importante de su carrera: en octubre de 2008, tras la renuncia de Basile, Maradona fue presentado como nuevo seleccionador de Argentina, un anuncio que llenó de ilusión las calles del país, pero que también le supuso muchos problemas.

El 19 de noviembre de 2008 debutó con victoria ante Escocia en Hampden Park. Allí, precisamente ante el mismo rival, Maradona había marcado su primer gol con la Selección muchos años atrás. En las Eliminatorias Sudamericanas con destino al Mundial de Sudáfrica 2010, Argentina sufrió una de las mayores goleadas de su historia. El 1 de abril de 2009, con un joven Leo Messi en el once inicial, la Albiceleste recibió un doloroso 6-1 por parte de Bolivia en el Estadio Hernando Siles de La Paz, situada a 3.625 metros sobre el nivel del mar. la Selección no carburaba y la prensa y los aficionados comenzaban a dudar de las capacidades del '10' como seleccionador nacional. Argentina acabó logrando el billete a Sudáfrica como cuarta clasificada y Maradona estalló y pronunció unas polémicas y recordadas palabras: “Con perdón de las damas, que la chupen. Que la sigan chupando. Yo soy blanco o negro, gris no lo voy a ser en la vida. Ustedes me trataron como me están tratando. Sigan mamando”. Diego fue suspendido dos meses por la Comisión Disciplinaria de la FIFA y tuvo que pagar una multa de 25.000 francos suizos.

La Albiceleste se plantó en el Mundial 2010 con más dudas que certezas y con una plantilla que aunaba juventud y veteranía. Jugadores como Demichelis, Heinze, Verón, Walter Samuel, Palermo o Diego Milito convivían con Messi, Higuaín, Di María o Agüero, que ya despuntaban el fútbol europeo. Argentina pasó accedió a octavos como primera de grupo y venció 3-1 a Mexico con doblete de Tevez y un gol de Higuaín y la euforia se desataba entre los hinchas. But nevertheless, Alemania goleó a los de Maradona en cuartos en el que fue el último partido de 'El Pelusa' como seleccionador nacional. El 27 de julio, 24 partidos, 18 victorias y 6 derrotas después, la AFA comunicó la rescisión del contrato de Diego.

El ciclo de Maradona estuvo marcado por sus constantes desavenencias con Carlos Bilardo, secretario técnico de la Albiceleste en aquel momento. El '10' dejó claro desde el principio de su mandato que las alineaciones eran su responsabilidad y no del 'Narigón'. La falta de diálogo entre ambos era más que evidente y aunque públicamente se abrazaban y celebraban, en la intimidad se lanzaban dardos envenenados. Maradona incluso acusó a Bilardo de querer quitarle el puesto a Julio Grondona, entonces presidente de la AFA, que tuvo que intervenir para que sellaran la paz antes del Mundial de 2010. En Sudáfrica las cosas no fueron bien y después de la goleada sufrida ante Alemania en cuartos de final, Maradona culpó a Bilardo de traición. “Grondona me mintió y Bilardo me traicionó”, aseguró el actual técnico de Gimnasia. El 'Doctor' desmintió tales acusaciones y afirmó que siempre se jugó “la vida por Maradona” y atacó a los colaboradores más cercanos del Diego de querer intoxicar su relación, prácticamente rota.

Después de su aventura fallida como seleccionador de Argentina, que le dejó muy tocado en la opinión pública, Maradona decidió poner rumbo a Emiratos Árabes Unidos, donde estuvo al frente de Al Wasl (2011-2012) y más tarde de Al Fujairah (2017-2018). En 2018 fue nombrado presidente del Dinamo de Brest de Bielorrusia, cargo que ocupó durante tres meses. Cuando le llamaron de Dorados de Sinaloa, de la Segunda División mexicana, el propio Diego se autonombró presidente de honor del Dinamo. De vuelta a Sudamérica, Maradona estuvo a punto de ascender en dos ocasiones con Dorados, pero el 13 de junio de 2019 dejaba el banquillo para recuperarse de unos problemas de hombro y rodillas que acarrea desde su época de jugador.

Diego regresó a Argentina y desde entonces, fueron innumerables los rumores de que iba a volver a dirigir en el fútbol argentino. Defensa y Justicia, Belgrano de Córdoba, Nueva Chicago y Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, entre otros, fueron varios de los clubes que sondearon al 'Pelusa', pero quería centrarse en su salud. Finalmente y a pesar de las recomendaciones médicas, Diego Armando Maradona aceptó la oferta de Gimnasia y el 5 de septiembre se convirtió en su nuevo técnico. El reto del '10' no era pequeño. El 'Lobo' estaba en puestos de descenso y con un promedio que no invitaba a soñar con la remontaba, pero la ilusión que trajo Diego hizo olvidar el mal momento que travesaba el club.

Maradona fue recibido como un auténtico Dios en La Plata. En tres días, Gimnasia aumentó en un 10% sus socios y las ventas de camisetas y de productos del Diego se dispararon, aumentando exponencialmente las arcas del equipo. El astro argentino fue presentado por un Bosque repleto de hinchas que coreaban su nombre y lanzaban papelitos al aire para celebrar su llegada. Un visiblemente emocionado Maradona pronunció un discurso en el que no desaprovechó la ocasión de atizar a las autoridades del fútbol: “Cómo puedo explicar yo con palabras las sensaciones que a uno le entran por el cuerpo. Yo cuando entré me puse a llorar porque no tengo palabras. Pero me apareció mi vieja y me calmó, pensé en todos mis hijos. He dejado algo en el deporte argentino. Obvio que quería dirigir en Argentina. Eran dos personas, Blatter y Grondona, apuraban a los presidentes para que no me contraten. No me esperaba todo esto. Cuando entré acá, cuando vi todo esto, no lo puedo creer. La vamos a pelear con los pibes, los vi entrenar en un loco, en un rondo y mañana nos vamos a reunir con el Gallego Méndez y el martes vamos a decir cómo queremos jugar. Si Dios quiere, Gimnasia se salva. Le digo al fútbol argentino que a mí después de la Selección me hicieron una cruz, en el 94' con Blatter, De Luca y Grondona, me borraron. Estoy acá de pie como quería la Tota, la Tota me decía que no me muera por esa porquería y no me morí por esa porquería“.

Desde aquel día, Diego ha sido recibido por todo lo alto en todos los campos del fútbol argentino que ha visitado con Gimnasia. En el Bosque es habitual verle sentado en un trono que subastan al término de cada partido para una causa benéfica. Sea el rival que sea el que tenga enfrente, todas las miradas van hacia él, tiene hasta su propia 'DiegoCam' en la televisión argentina para ver sus reacciones durante todo el encuentro. Todos los homenajes han sido especiales, pero si ha habido uno que ha dado la vuelta al mundo ha sido el de La Bombonera. Diego Armando Maradona fue recibido -no sin polémica ya que la actual dirigencia de Boca no tenía claro el homenaje- entre cánticos, aplausos y vítores. El ídolo xeneize pisaba el templo casi 20 años después de la última vez y dejaba imágenes para el recuerdo como un apasionado beso con Tevez que emulaba el 'Beso del Alma' con Caniggia del 96. Y se obró el milagro, no de la forma esperada, pero Gimnasia evitó la caída al infierno. La crisis del coronavirus obligó las autoridades a cancelar la temporada y los descensos quedaron anulados.

Hasta D10s tiene un demonio dentro. Como cantaban Los Suaves, “sin vicio no puedo estar… ¡vicio, vicio!”. El de Maradona fueron la noche, las mujeres y la cocaína, combinación más peligrosa que su zurda inmortal. Hay mucha controversia sobre dónde y cuando empezó el argentino su destructivo romance con la blanca, pero todo apunta a Barcelona con agravamiento decisivo y desastroso en Nápoles. Su troupe no le ayudaba. El reportaje de Emilio Pérez de Rozas en 1991, tan costumbrista que duele de leer, daba claves de lo que vendría después. Estaba a la vista de todos. El pecado venía en una manzana familiar, su agente Jorge Cyterszpiler. “El Diego vivía en un entorno demencial”, asegura una de las fuentes del reportaje. En la casa de Barcelona, en la calle Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, vivía un auténtico clan. La novia, Claudia Villafañe, padres, hermanos y su cuñado, El Morsa. Por parte de los Cyterszpile, Jorge y Silvio, amigos de exóticos nombres como El Chino, El Ladilla… “Eran parásitos”.

Los entrenamientos los pasó Menotti a la tarde, según su versión por los biorritmos, según la de las malas lenguas, para acomodar la ajetreada vida nocturna de la gran estrella. La que le llevó, aunque nunca nadie lo ha querido asegurar y pese a todos los indicios, a sufrir una enfermedad de transmisión sexual. Pérez de Rozas recaba un testimonio que habla de la otra debilidad del genio, el sexo. Un directivo fue a visitarlo y esto es lo que se encontró. “Me abrió la puerta uno de sus amigos y me hizo pasar”, explicaba el directivo, “pregunté cual era la habitación de Diego en la que esperaba encontrarle descansando. Cual no fue mi sorpresa cuando abrí la puerta y lo encontré desnudo en la cama, junto a Claudia y su perrito, viendo una película pornográfica”.

Su vida era tal que tanto el Nápoles como luego el Sevilla le pondrían vigilancia, ya fuera con personas cercanas a él o incluso detectives privados. Pero los escándalos no cesaron. La Camorra, la mafia napolitana, le utilizó desde el mismo día de su presentación y lo llevaban de fiesta en fiesta, a la vez que fue detenido en pleno centro de Sevilla por conducir a 140 kilómetros hora. La vida de Maradona se resumía, como él mismo admite en el reciente documental dirigido por el oscarizado Asik Kapadia, en una rutina demencial: “Fútbol de jueves a domingo y coca de lunes a miércoles”. Regándolo todo, el sexo más desenfrenado. Su chófer calcula en ese mismo filme que El Pelusa se acostó “con ocho mil mujeres”. Prostitutas y coca, un binomio del que hablaba abiertamente en grabaciones que le interceptaron los Carabinieri y que pusieron a la Camorra tan nerviosa que dejaron caer al ídolo, que llegó a ser condenado por tráfico de drogas. Maradona se adentró en los caminos del exceso… y se perdió.
