Malaga will host the 2024 Triathlon World Championship Finals

MADRID, 9 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Malaga will host the 2024 Triathlon World Championship Finals, the most important test of this sport, in which the world champions of the Elite, sub-23, junior and paratriathlon category will be crowned together with the celebration of the annual congress of ‘World Triathlon’, reports the Junta de Andalucía in a statement.

“Awarding the 24 Championship Finals to Malaga means a lot to the International Federation. The Spanish Federation’s commitment to our sport and to taking the organization of top-level triathlon events to the highest level is remarkable, and there are no words to express how grateful that we are all for their commitment”, said the Spanish Marisol Casado, president of the International Triathlon Federation and member of the IOC.

It is the largest annual event in the world triathlon, whose previous hosts have been cities such as London, Budapest, Beijing, Auckland, Chicago, Gold Coast, Lausanne, Edmonton or Abu Dhabi. In this 2023 Spain will also be held, in Pontevedra, from September 20 to 24.

For his part, the president of the Spanish Triathlon Federation (FETRI), José Hidalgo, declared that they could not “miss the opportunity” to associate the image of their sport with a city like Malaga. “Malaga’s concession for the Grand Final will be a big surprise for many, but we could not miss the opportunity, neither FETRI nor World Triathlon to associate ourselves with a city like this”, he commented.

The Spanish commitment to international triathlon is on the rise, with examples such as the recent celebration of the Multisport Triathlon World Championship in Ibiza, but next year it will be even greater. “If this year was the year the commitment of Spain with the Triathlon was brutal, announcing that next year we have the Grand Final in Malaga and in Pontevedra the Multisport of 2025 confirms our weight on the international scene”, Hidalgo concluded.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the Junta de Andalucía, Arturo Bernal, celebrated this designation, “which will put Andalusia in the spotlight of the international triathlon”, and which demonstrates the commitment of the community institutions for the ” big sporting events.
