The Consell de Ibiza presented its sports agenda for 2024 this Thursday, with an event held in the Comet Retiro space in Madrid thanks to the Fitur framework, where the Pitiusa island claimed, in the words of athlete Marc Tur, as “an ideal place for both train like to compete” at any time of the year.
“Thanks to sport, Ibiza has achieved something that seemed impossible years ago: deseasonalizing tourism outside of the summer season,” the Consell stressed in a press release. In fact, its president, Vicent Marí, stated that the Pitiusa island “is much more than party and leisure.”
“We definitely have the best ambassadors. They have convinced me that Ibiza is the ideal place to practice any sport. You love Ibiza a lot and that shows in how you express yourself and how you live your experiences. We are more than what many see,” Mari reiterated.
At the event, which was presented by Lourdes García Campos, the athletes Marc Tur, Carlos Mayo, Dani Mateo, Reyes Estévez and Nuria Picas, the sailor Guillermo Altadill and the former professional cyclists Alberto Contador and Óscar Pereiro served as ambassadors, along with the so-called 'empty corridor'. Tur, an Olympic walker at the Tokyo 2020 Games and a native of Ibiza, was full of praise for his homeland. “It is true that I have been in Madrid for 11 years, but I always long to train on the paths of Santa Eulalia, San Juan, San Antonio… It is a privilege to be able to return home and enjoy that nature, there you have the sea and you have the mountains. It is an ideal place both to train and to compete,” he commented.
“The island strengthens itself every year as a sports destination, something that everyone involved appreciates and that has managed to give more life to Ibiza. Its sports offer, which adds to its already extensive gastronomy, the beauty of its landscapes and its mild climate , allows thousands of visitors to enjoy that great unknown that is Ibiza outside of nightlife,” highlighted the Consell's press release.
“Proof of this are the eight events that mark the calendar and that have moved the island to the international calendar. The 10k Ibiza-Platja d'en Bossa, La Ruta de la Sal, the Vuelta a Ibiza MTB Scott by Shimano, the Santa Eulària Ibiza Marathon, the Ibiza Half Marathon, the Vuelta Ciclotourista a Ibiza Campagnolo, the Ibiza Trail Marathon and the 3 Days Trail Ibiza,” explained the Consell statement.
Finally, President Marí said that “previously the season began with the opening of nightclubs and now it is inaugurated by sporting events.” “We are committed to sports and healthy living. You have helped us achieve deseasonalization of the island,” he concluded.
