Jordan Díaz’s triumph in the triple jump made up for the discreet Spanish performance

The Gallur Municipal Sports Center, in Madrid, hosted this Friday the seventh and final stop of the World Athletics Indoor Tour at its Gold level, crowning as champions Tom Walsh in shot put, Devynne Charlton in 60 meter hurdles, Piotr Lisek in pole vault, Yasser Triki in triple jump and Catalin Tecuceanu in 800 meters.

The Los Cármenes neighborhood was once again the focus of attention for the short track, thanks to an event that was also the last on the international calendar before the World Indoor Championships, which will be held from March 1 to 3 in Glasgow (Scotland).

New Zealander Tom Walsh was crowned in the weight contest with 22.03 m in his last throw. It was worth it for the double Olympic medalist and three-time world champion to finish second, behind the Jamaican Rajindra Campbell (22.16 m), to overtake the American Roger Steen for the lead of the circuit, sixth on the Madrid tartan with 21.06 m.

In the women’s 60 m hurdles, Devynne Charlton arrived with her brand new world record of 7.67 and touched it, as she won the final with 7.68. The Bahamian, who had shown her good form in the semifinals (7.79), shone alongside the Dutch Nadine Visser, who in the first ‘semi’ did 7.79 and then finished second in this meeting with 7.78, ahead of the Polish Pia Skrzyszowska (7.83) and the Irish Sarah Kate Lavin (7.95).

In the men’s 60 m hurdles, outside the circuit and with a direct finish in Gallur, the Italian Lorenzo Ndele Simonelli won with 7.46 and was escorted by the Spaniards Asier Martínez and Quique Llopis, who achieved respective times of 7.50 and 7.51 at the finish line .

In the pole vault competition, the Polish Piotr Lisek finally took the laurels of indoor champion, even though he only jumped twice to win the bar at 5.70 m; Second was the Portuguese Pedro Buaro (5.60 m) and third was the Spanish Aleix Pi (5.50 m).

The men’s triple crowned the Algerian Yasser Triki, third with his best jump of 16.66 m during a test won by the Spanish Jordan Alejandro Díaz with 17.52 m in his third attempt, the second best world record of the year. The Portuguese Tiago Pereira, fourth with 16.63 m, and the French Jean-Marc Pontvianne, last classified with a null and the rest of invalid marks, failed in their assault on the lead.

The men’s 800 m was crowned by the Italian Catalin Tecuceanu thanks to his victory in 1:45.00, taking good advantage of Guillermo Rojo’s work as a hare. With the best world record of the year, Tecuceanu finished just ahead of the Spanish Mohamed Attaoui (1:45.67), Adrián Ben (1:45.72), Álvaro de Arriba (1:45.88) and Javier Mirón (1:46.52).

In the women’s 800 m, also outside the circuit and with a direct finish, the Spanish Lorea Ibarzabal (2:01.62) crossed the finish line behind the Ethiopian Tigist Girma (2:01.61) in a race dominated by her compatriot Worknesh Mesele (2 :01.01) and by the Italian Eloisa Coiro (2:01.50).

The women’s length saw the triumph of the Romanian Florentina Costina Iusco (6.65 m) and the second place of the Serbian Milica Gardasevic (6.64 m), who secured the circuit title after a bad afternoon for the Hungarian Diana Lesti ( 6.29m). For their part, the Spanish Fátima Diame and Tessy Ebosele were, respectively, third (6.55 m) and fourth (6.50 m).

On the negative aspect of the national representation, Saleta Fernández and Una Stancev were, in this order, eighth and ninth in the high jump; In that same contest, she beat the Slovenian Lia Apostolovski with 1.89 m. Additionally, in the women’s 400 m, she won over Romania’s Andrea Miklos in 51.11 to set a new meet record.

Meanwhile, in the men’s 3,000 m, the Norwegian Narve Gilje Nordas took victory (7:41.28) ahead of the Ethiopian Ermias Girma (7:41.94) and the Frenchman Hugo Hay (7:43.37).
