Franco: “Sport is proving to be an effective tool to promote the SDGs”

MADRID, 21 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of the Higher Sports Council (CSD), José Manuel Franco, assured that sport is proving to be an “effective tool” in promoting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), at the inauguration in Vigo of the conference ‘Sport and SDGs: the importance of Sport for reducing inequality within the framework of the 2030 Agenda’.

This conference, organized by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) and the Pontevedra Provincial Council, with the collaboration of the CSD, has been focused on the role of sports activity as a tool for local strategies to advance the SDGs.

In addition to the president of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Carmela Silva, and the president of the FEMP, Abel Caballero, fifteen municipal and provincial representatives from the sports field, experts in equality, disability and inclusion, and those responsible for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda at the municipal and provincial levels.

“Sport is proving to be an effective tool to promote the SDGs. Sport activity fosters social progress; promotes tolerance and respect; supports the empowerment of women and youth; and brings us closer to the development goals in terms of health, education and social inclusion, all of which are issues that mark the 2030 Agenda”, commented José Manuel Franco at the inauguration.

Therefore, Franco has stressed that “sport cannot be conceived solely as a recreational element.” “We must understand and manage it as a key economic sector, with a contribution to GDP of 3.3% and with a positive impact on youth employment, since 75% of the employment it generates involves jobs for people under 40 years of age “, he added.

VISIT TO THE CETD IN ROWING AND CANOEING OF TUI

During his visit to the province of Pontevedra, the president of the CSD has inaugurated the improvement works of the Specialized Center for Sports Technification (CETD) in Rowing and Canoeing in the municipality of Tui, which have received a CSD grant of 600,000 (599,863, 23) euros.

This amount has been allocated to the expansion and reform of the Quique Míguez Municipal Canoeing Center, headquarters of the Tudense Kayak Club, in charge of annually organizing the International Descent of the Miño.

Franco celebrated “being able to verify in situ that the second great sports revolution is reaching all corners of Spain, through the aid of the CSD to local corporations” so that they can have attractive facilities that “encourage their neighbors to prioritize your well-being and your health.

The Secretary of State for Sport has also highlighted that the renovation of this specialized center “will promote the holding of new international competitions, which will contribute to the promotion of tourism, the creation of employment and the development of the local economy”, also reinforcing Galicia’s commitment to being a key destination in the preparation of athletes and national teams.

So far, the Autonomous Community of Galicia has received a total of 4,324,851 euros from Component 26 of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Government of Spain, aimed at promoting the sports sector.

Of this amount, almost 2,750,000 euros are aimed at the modernization and ecological adaptation of Galician sports facilities; another 1,134,000 euros are part of the Social Plan, aimed at promoting gender equality and the inclusion of people with disabilities in sport; and 442,350 euros have been dedicated to the digitization of the sports ecosystem, such as technological solutions to improve accessibility to health and sports systems.

These aids are part of the 300 million euros that the Sports Sector Promotion Plan has to promote and renew the Spanish sports ecosystem, of which almost 102 million have already been territorialized between Autonomous Communities.
