Eagles will start the 2024 season in Brazil

Commissioner Roger Goodell told the media in Las Vegas that the Eagles’ first game of the 2024 season will be on a Friday night in Brazil. The Eagles’ opponent and the time of the game will be confirmed at a later time.

This is the NFL’s debut match in South America. It’s also the first Friday of the season since September 18, 1970, when the Rams upset the Cards 34–13 at L.A. Coliseum.

The match will take place on September 6 at the 47,252-seat Arena Corinthians in São Paulo.

It was used for soccer in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. It is home to the soccer team Sport Club Corinthians Paulista.

“It is an honor for the Eagles organization to be chosen to play in the first-ever NFL game located in South America,” Jeffrey Lurie claimed in a statement.

It is very important to our league that our sport grows around the world, so we are excited about the chance to get Eagles football in front of the 38 million spectators of sports in Brazil.

Brazil is a foreign melting pot and one of the world’s most culturally diverse countries. We can’t wait to experience its warm, lively, and welcoming atmosphere later this year.

This is an Eagles homecoming game. In 2024, they have nine home games planned, which means they will still play eight regular-season matchups at the Linc.

This is the second regular-season game the Eagles will play abroad. In October 2018, they upset the Jaguars 24–18 at Wembley Park in London.

In 2024, they will play the Falcons, Panthers, Browns, Packers, Jaguars, and Steelers on the road, in addition to their three division games. Since the Jaguars play in the capital every year, they can’t be a possible opponent.

On September 24, 1948, the Eagles lost to the Chicago Cards 21–14 at Comiskey Park to start the season.

That was the last time they played on a Friday. They did win the inaugural NFL title, though, a month later beginning at Shibe Park.

In 1960, the Eagles beat the Cowboys 27–25 at the Cotton Bowl on a Friday. That was the last time they played.

That same year, they also earned the NFL title. Overall, the Philadelphia Eagles team is 2-5-1 on Fridays. In 1935, they lost to the Pittsburgh Bucs and the Detroit Lions back-to-back.

Sixteen years ago, NFL games often happened on Fridays. But since 1970, there have been a mere eleven, and one of them was a Jets-Dolphins game on Christmas Eve, December 24.

In 1978, they played preseason games against the Saints in Mexico City. In 1989, they played the Browns, 1991, and 1993, they played the Bills, and finally, in 1993, they played the Saints.

“This historic first international game in South America shows how our global reach is continuing to grow,” Goodell said. “Playing on the first Friday night of the season is a one-of-a-kind way to show off our global development and goals.”
