Brussels insists on its defense of the open sports model after the CJEU ruling on the Super League

BRUSSELS, 10 Ene. (SportsFinding) –

The vice president of the European Commission and person in charge of Lifestyle Promotion, Margaritis Schinas, highlighted this Wednesday his defense of the open sports model against the format proposed by the Super League promoted by a group of large football clubs, including Real Madrid. and FC Barcelona.

“I want to reiterate that our commitment to the European sports model is unconditional, of course there are commercial elements in football but the European model must include everyone and be fair,” he indicated at a press conference from Brussels, despite the fact that the European justice will point to “abuse of position” by UEFA and FIFA and will consider their veto of the Super League illegal.

In this sense, Schinas has stressed that this format speaks of “who Europeans are and how they live”, insisting that he will continue to defend this system against initiatives such as the Super League, which the Greek commissioner censored as a competition “for the elites”. .

Thus, the Community Vice President has celebrated that “he is not alone in this defense” and the European Parliament, the Member States, national football associations and fans support the European model.

This comes after the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) reasoned last December that the FIFA and UEFA rules by which any project for a new club football competition is subject to the prior authorization of these two associations and which, in addition, prohibit clubs and players from participating under penalty of sanctions “oppose” Community competition law.
