Arsenal anger animal supporters over a trade deal

Arsenal have angered animal supporters after closing a sponsorship deal with Ganzberg Brewery, a beer company related to dog meat in Cambodia. According to one study, Ganzberg is the most popular alcoholic drink in the country and eating dog meat and other 'snacks' with beer has been 'normalized' in Cambodia.

More than nine million dogs are slaughtered for their meat each year in Southeast Asia, as calculated by 'Four Paws', of which there are three million in Cambodia. Precisely, Ganzberg's billboards are littered with dog meat menus. “It is a great agreement because we share values,” the company mentioned at the time.

As published The Independent, many of the dogs and cats used for trade in Cambodia, Indonesia and Vietnam are pets stolen from the street, who are transported long distances and killed by “appalling methods such as blows, blowtorches, drowning and electrocution.”

An Arsenal spokesperson has stated in The Independent they have been “in regular contact with the Four Paws and Ganzberg on this matter.” And he added: “Ganzberg has assured us that they do not endorse the consumption of dog meat and that they are working hard to remove any advertisement promoting this.”.
