Travis Kelce still wants to play, which is why the team’s tight end didn’t talk about quitting after this season, which will be his 11th in the NFL.
The talk about retiring comes out of a June Vanity Fair interview with Kelce, who is 34 years old and talked about planning his life after sports.
During the NFL season, he has been in a lot of ads. He also co-hosts a show with his brother, Philadelphia Eagles middle Jason Kelce, and he was the host of “Saturday Night Live” last year. His friendship with Taylor Swift made him famous in the fall.
What’s going on with Kelce outside of football? If the Chiefs lose their wild-card game against the Miami Dolphins on Saturday night (which could be one of the coolest NFL games ever), he says it will not be his last. His deal keeps him on the team until the 2025 season, he said.
This year has been different for the Chiefs. Kelce called it “a different journey.” They lost 11 games to 6, which was their most losses since 2017, and didn’t look like the dynamic teams they used to be. Now, getting an additional Super Bowl ring is their main goal.
For example, Kelce told The Wall Street Journal in November that he thinks about retiring “more than anyone might imagine” because his body is getting old. “The hurt.
“I still feel every one of the 10 surgeries I’ve had because of the injuries that won’t go away,” the 34-year-old said.
Kelce said that he tries his hand at other jobs during the off-season. For example, he was a guest speaker on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” in March, after the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 57. But Kelce doesn’t change anything during the NFL season.
“That’s the point to the offseason—getting out and about to be able to find what it is that you love to do,” said Kelce. “I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy doing some things outside of sports, like being on camera.”
In October, Kelce turned 34 years old. He said that he has thought about retiring, but never really thought about what he would do if he wasn’t playing for the Chiefs.
“I’ve been fortunate to do some things outside of the world of sports that I love doing, particularly being on camera,” said Kelce. “The stuff kind of gave me new happiness and perhaps a new job path.”
“But that’s funny coming from me at this point of my career.” It seems like a long way off now.
A record over a tight end, Kelce had seven straight seasons with 1,000 yards. This season, he fell 16 yards short of that mark.
He could have played in the last regular-season game against the Chargers last weekend, but he chose to take the week off with Patrick Mahomes, Isiah Pacheco, and several other players.
The Chiefs won the AFC West title and the third playoff spot in their conference the week before. The “Saturday Night Live” stuff gave me a new sense of happiness and maybe even a new job path.
“I just didn’t care enough regarding [1,000 yards],” Kelce stated. “I thought I could have rested and let the guys play ball without worrying about moving this older player 16 yards.” I never felt good.
The Chiefs had a different kind of season. They lost more games than they had in any other year since 2017 (11-6). The Chiefs were 15th in scoring, and their defense was very important. They didn’t just depend on Mahomes and Kelce’s strong passing approach and high-scoring offense.
“I think you’re always pushing yourself to get close to that level of success because that’s what you expect from yourself.”
To reach your goals, you have to do more than just accept it. You also have to understand situational football by the end of the game and be there for your team when they need you the most.
