Antonio Banderas busts the ticket office of his theater in Malaga

The actor triumphs in his most personal project, the opening of the Soho Theater in Malaga, filling his show 'A chorus line' for two months with more than 41,000 tickets sold. Now he faces his nomination for Best Actor at the Hollywood Oscars for his film with Pedro Almodóvar 'Pain and glory'

Yesterday Sunday the curtain closed the show A chorus line with which Antonio Banderas has revolutionized the Andalusian and Spanish scene, not only for returning to the stages of this popular filmmaker but for having done so by opening his own theater, the Soho-old Alameda theater – from Malaga.

The Malaga actor has seen his dream come true after more than ten years of various attempts. In fact, three years ago he rejected municipal support after the controversy generated over the possible transfer of the old Victoria and Astoria cinemas. Banderas lamented the lack of public support for this cultural project for the city. However, he got private support thanks to several sponsors and the involvement of CaixaBank, which also gives its name to the theater after an investment close to two million euros.

On November 15, the Soho Theater officially opened its doors in an inauguration that did have the highest public authorities of all administrations, from the Vice President of the Government, Carmen Calvo, to the President of the Board, Juanma Moreno, passing through the Mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre. There was no shortage of representatives from the world of culture and friends of the actor, led by Pedro Almodóvar and a host of famous faces.

But to that success of the opening of a new theater has followed a greater one: in just a few days, the new musical starring Antonio Banderas sold the 41,000 tickets put up for sale, with tickets whose price ranged between 26 and 140 euros. In fact, in the face of the lawsuit, the company decided to increase the number of weekly functions, which have always hung up the sold-out sign. A good part of those 41,000 entries are spectators from outside of Malaga who have come to the Costa Rican capital to see the popular actor, which has been an important revulsion for the tourism sector – hotels, restaurants, taxis, etc. – in the off season.

Now, the show starts a tour that will take you first to Bilbao two weeks, then to Barcelona for a month, and already in April to Madrid, although without Antonio Banderas, which Pablo Puyol will replace.

For his part, the filmmaker will immediately focus on promoting his Oscar nomination for Best Actor for which he has been nominated for his film Dolor y Gloria with world-class actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio, protagonist of Once Upon a Time in .. Hollywood; Joaquin Phoenix, protagonist of Joker; Adam Driver, from the Story of a marriage; and Jonathan Pryce, from The Two Popes. Antonio Banderas has already won the Golden Palm for Best Actor for this same work at the Cannes Festival and has been nominated for the Golden Globes.
