Planning your first trip to Portugal

It’s summer for everyone and also for Princess Leonoralthough the Crown is above all else. In recent weeks, we have seen the Princess of Asturias from one engagement to another. She attended the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the proclamation of her father, Felipe VI, presided over a visit to the Gallery of the Royal Collections with Infanta Sofía, and this Friday she accompanied the King in the presentation of the Royal Dispatches to the new Promotion of the Scale of Non-Commissioned Officers after receiving in Zaragoza their appointment as second lieutenant and the Grand Cross of Military Merit.

The truth is that, after a demanding year of training at the General Military Academy in Zaragoza, the Crown Heir is now beginning a period of rest until the end of next month, when she will enter the Naval Military School in Marín (Pontevedra) for her second year of military training, and where she will preside over the ceremony of the Oath of Allegiance and Delivery of the Royal Dispatches on July 16. Of course, before her well-deserved vacation, Leonor will have to fulfill her institutional obligations.

This week, the Princess of Asturias will face her busiest week, but also the most decisive one: will travel to Portugal, which will be his first official trip outside Spain. Before that, he will have to deal with other commitments appropriate to his rank.

On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Princess of Girona Foundation, a series of events will be held in the coming days, with the presence of some members of the Royal Family. On 9 July, Leonor and Infanta Sofía will visit Jaume Plensa’s workshop in the town of Sant Feliú de Llobregat. Shortly afterwards, they will join the King and Queen for an informal meeting with some of the young prizewinners from previous editions of the Foundation.

On July 10, she will return to Catalonia for her annual appointment with the awards of the Princess of Girona Foundation, which she presides. The ceremony will take place in the Girona town of Lloret de Mar, on the Mediterranean coast. It should be noted that due to the anti-monarchy protests in Girona, an alternative location has been sought in recent years. Last year it was at the Camiral hotel, in Caldes de Malavella (Girona). Previously, the awards were held in Barcelona.

On the morning of that day, the Princess and the Infanta will meet with 30 young people, who have participated in different programs of the foundation, in the gardens of Santa Clotilde in Lloret de Mar. In the evening, she will lead the meeting with the Youth Advisory Council of the Foundation, which will also be joined by the King and Queen and the Infanta, and will preside over the presentation of the 2024 Princess of Girona Awards.

The decisive date

The Royal Family will return to Madrid, while the Princess will prepare for her first official trip outside Spain, scheduled for Friday 12 July, which she will attend without the company of her family, but with that of José Manuel Albares, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Queen Leonor will go and return to Lisbon on the same day for a visit that will last approximately eight hours, which is taking place in response to the invitation of the President of the Republic of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousaa series of conferences on the environment and the care of the aquatic ecosystem. Rebelo de Sousa will be the one who, as soon as she lands, will receive Leonor at the National Palace of Belém. During that day, the Princess of Asturias will also visit the Jerónimos Monastery, one of the most representative sites of the Portuguese capital.
