Miguel Angel Muñoz has celebrated his 41st birthday with Sergio Peris-Mencheta. “The best birthday present I got was from the titan, who I went to visit at ‘City of Hope’ in Los Angeles where he has been fighting leukemia for many months and was recovering from his recent bone marrow transplant,” reads the note on her Instagram profile.
“When I arrived, there were only a few days left before he could ring the bell three times, which would mean that the transplant had worked and he could now go home with his family to continue taking care of himself and enjoy this new life that begins from now on,” he explains in a post, thanks to which we know the latest news about the actor’s health. “Sergio is like that. He has surprised me for many years with his great abilities, but here he has already beaten the game with 7 expansions,” he says of his partner. Along with Sergio Peris-Mencheta in the hospital was his wife, Marta Solaz. Miguel Ángel Muñoz also talks about her: “She is as extraordinary as he is and has been the other person in charge of transplanting energy, confidence, generosity and above all, love.”
Sergio Peris-Mencheta shows every day the impressive lesson of courage that he faces in his fight. His latest project is the direction of the play, ‘14.4’, which can be seen at the ‘Matadero’ in Madrid. Miguel Ángel Muñoz praised seeing how his friend faces his fight against the disease. “He rang the bell, went home, finished directing #14.4 and I was able to attend the premiere in Madrid. I was able to enjoy this birthday present in the form of a play, written by Juan Diego Botto.” He concluded his message by thanking everyone for living this “great birthday that I didn’t want to celebrate and for all the congratulations I have received.” He said at first that he thought of postponing the premiere as the best option, due to the director’s health. But Sergio Peris-Mencheta wanted to continue with the work and told him that it suited him. He supervised all the rehearsals from home through cameras that were installed expressly for him.
He worked from the hospital. “For everyone it has been a lesson in love for theatre and love for the profession we do. There is something extra in the love of telling stories and transmitting that has to have been impregnated somewhere in the performance,” said Juan Diego Botto. Last January, the actor informed his followers through a message published on social media that he was suffering from leukaemia. “I am in the middle of chemotherapy and a subsequent bone marrow transplant. And I have to play with another hand this time. I am as only those who have experienced a situation similar to mine know.” Peris-Mencheta admitted to feeling “vulnerable, terrified and small.” He also indicated that in this complicated stage he could only be “evaluating each of my steps on earth for a few months now. I know that in this game I do not decide everything. I know that life rules, and that there is a part where I have to trust and let myself go. But I carry my pockets full of dice, and I squeeze them all the time. And the thing is that I have always been very much into sixes,” he wrote.
He explained that he was getting by. “They didn’t tell me about this phase before, it’s very hard. I’m already at home, but I thought they sent you home when you were already well, and no. You’re at home, but you’re a 150-year-old man who moves around as best he can, with a host of nausea, vomiting, fatigue, diarrhea… Everything goes through your body in the space of an hour,” he said. The actor from the legendary series ‘Al salir de clase’ had surgery in May and spent just over a month in hospital. His family has been very supportive of him, with his tireless wife at the helm, Marta Solaz, with whom he has been in a relationship for almost two decades. He’s also being supported by many friends, including Miguel Ángel Muñoz, who has not taken the opportunity to visit him in Los Angeles. “I’m at home letting myself be looked after. This time they’re letting me sleep because I’m not hanging on to a drip, which is also very much appreciated,” explained the actor. Sergio Peris-Mencheta has two sons, Río and Olmo.
