The Kings visited Valencia this Monday to protect all those affected by the terrible fire that broke out last Thursday in the Campanar neighborhood. Don Felipe y doña Letizia They arrived at the Palau de la Música in mid-afternoon, visibly affected. After being received by the authorities, they have accessed the interior, where they have met with more than 100 families affected for the tragedy, which has claimed the lives of 10 people and more than 80 pets.
The victims have requested that the meeting be held behind closed doors, without the media. They have arrived divided into three groups and accompanied by the police. The kings have spoken with all of them to learn about their situation first-hand and offer them support, along with María José Catalá, mayor of Valencia, and Carlos Mazón, president of the Valencian Generalitat.
Shortly after, they moved to Ground Zero of the fire, located in the Campanar neighborhood, at the intersection of General Avilés Street and Maestro Rodrigo Street and where now only the structure of the building remains. Here, the kings have greeted, one by one, all the members of the Emergency services who participated in extinguishing the fire (professionals from the UME, ground soldiers, both local and national police and firefighters) as well as all those professionals who attended to the victims. The first hypotheses suggest that the fire was caused by an electrical failure in the awning of one of the terraces. The tenant was not inside the home at that time, located in the tallest tower, fourteen stories high. The deceased, due to inhalation of the toxic cloud, were found on the two floors immediately above.
A few hours before, from Barcelona, King Felipe sent a message: “The mourning of all of Valencia is the mourning of all of Spain and that is how the Queen and I want to convey it when we share there, with the Valencians, their grief and their pain. We are still shocked.”
