Medvedev and Zverev join Alcaraz in Laver Cup Team Europe

MADRID, 8 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Russian Daniil Medvedev and the German Alexander Zverev will join the Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz in Team Europe, led by captain Bjorn Borg, in the Laver Cup 2024, which will be held at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin (Germany) from the 20th to the 22nd. September, as announced by the competition.

Borg assured that they are going with the intention of “snatching the Cup from the defending champion”, the World Team, which is captained by former tennis player John McEnroe. To do this, the Swede included “three of the great figures of tennis” in his list of six players.

“Team Europe is very motivated to win back the Cup in Berlin. With Daniil, Alexander and Carlos on my team, I think we have a good chance of doing it. The boys have had an incredible start to the year, and this is a first half of our really strong lineup. I'm delighted to have these champions for 2024,” Borg stated.

Medvedev, who reached his third men's final at the Australian Open this year, represented Team Europe at the Laver Cup in Boston in 2021, the year in which he lifted his first 'Grand Slam' title at the US Open. He currently occupies the number 3 position in the ATP rankings.

“The most exciting thing about the Laver Cup is always the team spirit, because it is very rare that I can play team competitions in tennis. Having Carlos and 'Sascha' on our team will help a lot because they are two of the best players in the world and I am very excited to try to get Team Europe back to the winning path,” stressed the Russian.

For his part, Zverev, world number 6, recently lost a thrilling five-set match against Medvedev in the semifinals in Melbourne. He has been part of the winning team every time he has participated in the Laver Cup competition. He competed in the first four editions in Prague (2017), Chicago (2018), Geneva (2019) and Boston (2021), all for the Team Europe.

“I am very excited to return to the Laver Cup. The atmosphere is always electric and having the Laver Cup held in Germany, for me in particular, will be a once in a lifetime experience,” said the German.
