It’s not hard for the Seahawks to go from Pete Carroll to Mike Macdonald.
“Always admired him even from afar,” Macdonald said of Carroll at his Thursday press conference to introduce himself. “I respect him a great deal because of his track record.”
He’s likely a coach in the Hall of Fame. Even though Pete has a great personality, it’s his own and true to who he is. I think that’s why the players like him, why he has a good name, and why his record of success is what it is.
“I am a different person. I plan to be me every day as you get to know me. You’re going to get me. It’s not a show, and I don’t have any other plans or anything.
It’s a question of what’s best for the players, what’s best for the team, and how we can win. You’ll find something funny in there too, I promise.
A lot of people will like it, but not everyone will. Trying to be someone you’re not is two things: one, it wears you out, and two, everyone can tell.
The fact that Macdonald won’t try to transform into another Carroll is great. After the Seahawks fired Carroll in January, it’s not likely that the team’s president John Schneider, or the rest of the search committee were looking for someone who was just like Carroll.
But authenticity is still important. In this case, Macdonald will have to do what got him this job: lead the defense.
Macdonald told the media on Thursday that even though he is now the team’s head coach, he will still be in charge of everything on the defensive end of the ball.
The search for a new head coach for the Seattle Seahawks is over. One of the smartest people in football when it comes to defense, Mike Macdonald, is going to the NFC West to become the team’s first head coach in 14 years.
Macdonald did a great job as defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. He is now the Seahawks’ new head coach after Pete Carroll leaves. Macdonald was a big part of the Ravens’ famous defense this season.
Now he has to improve the Seahawks’ defense, which, despite having a lot of talent, did not do well at all last season.
“Macdonald has become innovative, poised, as well as insightful beyond his age, and we’ve seen his secondary scheme work effectively both in the NFL along with college,” Tannenbaum said. “I see the limitless promise here for Seattle.”
It’s a good fit for Macdonald to be a head coach after being the defensive coordinator over Baltimore for the last two years. Now he’s getting his chance.
It’s interesting to see what Macdonald and general manager Jon Schneider do on the opposing side of the ball since Macdonald is likely to play defense. Carroll has been the coach since 2010. He gets to help the team in a new way.
Along with Riq Woolen, Devon Witherspoon, Boye Mafe, and Julian Love, the Seahawks defense has some great young weapons. But the offense also has a lot of strong weapons.
Any guesses on where Seattle will go from here? With Macdonald as its head coach, the team has a good defensive mind who can start an exciting new chapter in the Pacific Northwest.
It will be interesting to see how things go over the next twelve months, but the Seahawks have everything they need to be a playoff team to Macdonald’s first year as coach, which could mean “limitless upside” in the years to come.
There is a new coach in charge in the NFC West. The Seattle Seahawks have hired Mike Macdonald, the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, as the team’s next coach. He will take over for Pete Carroll.
At 36 years old, Macdonald is the NFL’s youngest head coach. He signs a deal for six years. For the better part of two years, Macdonald was in charge of the Ravens’ defense.
It is now true that the NFC West has two executive coaches who are younger than 40 years old.
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is 44 years old. Jonathan Gannon is 41 years old, Sean McVay is 38 years old, and Macdonald is 36 years old.
