MADRID, 8 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz is the first choice of the European team for the next edition of the Laver Cup, which will be held from September 20 to 22, 2024 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin, so the world number two will debut in this tournament, as confirmed by captain Bjorn Borg.
“I am very excited for Carlos to join Team Europe in Berlin,” said Borg, who begins with the Murcian the construction of Team Europe that will try to recover the Laver in its seventh year, after two consecutive defeats in 2022 and 2023.
And for this they now turn to the champion of Wimbledon 2023 and the US Open 2022, with the clear objective of regaining the throne that he held in the first four editions. “The goal is to win and having Carlos committed to the cause of Team Europe is an exciting start to what I anticipate will be an exceptional roster,” predicted the European captain.
Alcaraz, who will debut in the tournament in its 2024 edition, thanked Borg for his “trust” and assured that he is “looking forward to forming a team” with those who are now his rivals. “It means a lot to represent Team Europe in the Laver Cup, it is a great honor,” confessed the Murcian in statements published on the tournament’s website.
“I will do everything that is asked of me to recover the Laver Cup for Team Europe. I am eager to know who will join me on the team next September,” added the Spaniard, world number two, who at only 20 years old has won 12 individual titles, including two ‘Grand Slam’ and four Masters 1,000.
For this three-day tournament that will be hosted by Berlin from September 20 to 22, 2024, the top three players on each team will earn a guaranteed invitation based on their ATP ranking on the Monday after Roland-Garros (June 10, 2024). If one of them decides not to participate, their place will be offered to another “high-ranking” player. While the remaining three positions will be chosen by the captains and appointed before the US Open.
