MADRID, 18 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The German cyclist Nico Denz (BORA-hansgrohe) won the twelfth stage of the Giro d’Italia on Thursday, held between Bra and Rivoli over 185 kilometers, after knowing how to suffer at the last level and beating the other two survivors of a great escape, while that the favorites, with the leader Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers), arrived together.
Nico Denz had been chasing a stage victory in the Giro d’Italia – he had made a second place in 2018 and a sixth in 2020 – and he finally achieved it, but from suffering. He was close to being off the hook, already being three in the lead, at Colle Braida (2nd) but he held on and, in the final fight, he was the strongest by far, beating Toms Skujins (Trek-Segafredo) and Sebastian Berwick (Israel- Premier Tech).
All of them were part of a large escape of about 30 members formed almost at the beginning of the stage. A day in which the peloton relaxed and let the breakaway take its course, in a stage that already seemed set for this to happen. The large group entered at 8:19 with the ‘pink jersey’ Thomas jogging alongside teammates and rivals.
