Sevilla suffers with notice in Europe

Sampaoli’s men fall 1-0 against Fenerbahce but go to the quarterfinals, a title guarantee for the Andalusians

MADRID, 16 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Sevilla advanced to the quarterfinals of the Europa League this Thursday despite the defeat (1-0) against Fenerbahce, thanks to the income from the first leg and knowing how to suffer to maintain the continental illusion, as a favorite even according to the numbers.

The Andalusian team, six times champion of the tournament, took their career to the title whenever they reached the quarterfinals. Thus, despite a season that does not finish finding a solution in the game, Jorge Sampaoli’s men become a rival to beat, although they have the urgency to improve the situation in LaLiga Santander.

The hell of Istanbul did not manage to burn a Sevilla that has been knowing how to suffer, taking heart from the lack of football. This is how they did last weekend to carry out a crucial duel for salvation against Almería and they did so in the Turkish capital, after the 2-0 first leg that the rival came close to equalizing.

Fenerbahce entered with force, but Sevilla knew how to handle their nerves and showed a good defensive version, which did not quite come together this season. Jorge Jesus’ men had possession but not as much offensive play as in the first leg, more guarded by Enner Valencia. Batshuayi’s injury did not cause excessive damage, while Sevilla came out little despite having Rafa Mir and En-Nesyri up front.

With half the job almost done, a handball from Alex Telles, who reviewed the referee after a VAR warning, made it 1-0 for Valencia from 11 meters on the brink of halftime. Hell won in heat at the restart, with the release of goals included with Dmitrovic affected. The Serbian goalkeeper was, as in recent games, the protagonist holding Sevilla.

However, the game seemed eternal to Sampaoli’s men, who gained oxygen with the entry of Ocampos and Lamela. The Argentines gave the visitors a little more ball, an outlet to breathe and not just defend, and Fenerbahce got the better of the precipitation. After a long discount, Sevilla celebrated their European joy to keep faith in a season that may still have a jackpot.
