Zverev, expelled from Acapulco for hitting the referee’s chair

ACAPULCO (MÉXICO), 23 Feb. (DPA/EP) –

German tennis player Alexander Zverev, number three in the world, was expelled this Tuesday from the Acapulco tournament, after hitting the referee’s chair after his defeat in the doubles match, reports the ATP.

“Due to unsportsmanlike conduct at the conclusion of his doubles match on Tuesday night (local time), Alexander Zverev has been disqualified from the Acapulco tournament,” the organization said on its official Twitter account.

The reigning Olympic champion repeatedly hit the referee’s chair, who was still sitting in it, after finishing the match that he lost with the Brazilian Marcelo Melo against the British Lloyd Glasspool and the Finn Harri Leiovaara, 2-6, 6 -4 and 6-10.

The German, 24, had previously been upset by a decision made by the referee. Zverev, who won the title in Acapulco last year, was due to play in the singles draw against compatriot Peter Gojowczyk in the round of 16.
