Xavi Moya, former Spanish boxing champion, dies in a traffic accident

Former Spanish boxer Xavi Moya, three-time Spanish middleweight champion and world and European kung fu and full contact champion, died on Saturday in a motorcycle accident in Barcelona at the age of 55.

“Xavi Moya, an icon, a reference in boxing, martial arts and an outstanding parakeet, has left us. Rest in peace,” RCD Espanyol, of which he was a fan, confirmed this Sunday.

The Barcelona native, born on November 23, 1967, confessed that he started boxing after being mugged on the street at the age of 16. Later, he debuted as a professional boxer in 1992 in a fight in Barcelona against José Manuel Varela, whom he managed to defeat by ‘KO’.

He was three times middleweight champion of Spain and amateur champion of Catalonia. In addition, he excelled in other martial arts; He became European and world kung fu champion in 1990 and 1991, respectively, and in full contact he won up to nine world titles and seven European titles.
