Yesterday, women’s football met another of the candidates to preside over the professional women’s football league: Beatriz Álvarez Mesa (39 years old, Asturias). A name that, furthermore, appears as a favorite to lead this new competition as it has the support of the majority of the clubs and joins other candidates such as the former Barça director María Teixidor or the former Athletic player Ainhoa Tirapu.
But, who is Beatriz Álvarez Mesa? This is the current General Director of Sports of the Government of the Principality of Asturias. A position behind which there is a great career in women’s football. Former player, former coach and former president of the Modern Oviedo between 2009 and 2018, a club in which he led and promoted one of the most powerful football schools for girls.
Diploma in Teaching, specializing in Physical Education, has stood out in recent years for leading the management of Asturian sports during the pandemicas well as for having been a spokesperson for the Board of Directors of the Higher Sports Council.
And, now, what is the roadmap? Everything is waiting for the deadlines to present the guarantees for the elections. The candidates need, at least, the endorsement of four clubs. If there was only one candidacy that got enough support (4 clubs or more), there would be no elections.
In this way, It remains to be seen if any of the other two candidates (Teixidor or Tirapu) get the endorsements. In the case of Álvarez Mesa, the Asturian would have tied the support of most of the clubs in the face of a new step in which the names that will lead the first professional women’s football league will be defined.
