Wawrinka will return to competition at the AnyTech365 Andalucía Open after more than a year off

Swiss tennis player Stan Wawrinka, former number three in the world, will compete again after more than a year off due to injury at the AnyTech365 Andalucía Open 2022, which will be held from March 27 to April 3 at Puente Romano Beach Resort in Marbella (Málaga). ), confirmed the organization on Monday after offering him a ‘wild card’, which the Spanish Carlos Gimeno has also received.

The Helvetian received the first of the three invitations available to the organization of the tournament and will play for the first time since March 2021, the same month in which he had to undergo surgery for an injury to his left foot. Later, in June, he underwent a new operation for an injury to the Achilles heel of the same foot.

Wawrinka, 36, has three ‘Grand Slams’ -the Australian Open 2014, Roland Garros 2015 and the US Open 2016-, a total of 16 ATP titles and an Olympic gold in Beijing 2008 together with Roger Federer in the modality men’s doubles. He achieved the best ranking of him in 2014, in which he was third, and sealed three consecutive years in the ‘Top 4’ between 2014 and 2016.

In his almost 20-year career, he has achieved more than 500 victories, and has been the only player to beat the ‘Big 4’ -Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray- both in the ‘Grand Slam’ and on clay, surface on which the Marbella tournament will be played.
