Today begins a new era at Barça. Four months after the resignation of Josep Maria Bartomeu before a motion of censure forced him to do so and after the postponement of the elections Because of the pandemic, the club finally reaches the decisive hour when 110,290 members with voting rights will choose a leader to face a decisive era in the future of the club, which is in one of its darkest hours at all levels as proof that last Monday the last president was arrested for the Barçagate case. Joan Laporta, Víctor Font and Toni Freixa are the candidates who choose to be the 42nd president the club and fix the mess.
The elections that will take place today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. are unprecedented. The pandemic has changed the operation of a process that since 1953 (the club's first pseudo-democratic election, since only men could vote) has been carried out more or less the same on fourteen occasions.
For the first time in history, voting by mail is allowed and you can vote in different venues. Of the total census of 110,290 members entitled to vote, 22,811 (20.7% of the census) asked to vote by mail. Of these, 20,663 finally voted. These ballots have been guarded at the Camp Nou since Friday and will be opened when election day ends.
Therefore today 87,479 members are called to the polls who will be able to exercise their right in six polling stations. The most important will be Barcelona (Camp Nou) where 78,987 members are mentioned, but it will also be possible to vote for the first time in Girona, Andorra, Lleida, Tarragona and Tortosa. It should be remembered that the Generalitat maintains the regional confinement of Catalonia this weekend, so that only members who live in those cities can come to cast their vote.
