Vilda: “We thought we were going to learn from what happened against Finland”

MADRID, 12 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish women’s coach, Jorge Vilda, has been “proud” of the work of his players despite the defeat against Germany (2-0) on the second day of the European Championship in England, but has regretted that they have once again “committed an error” that already cost them a goal in the first minutes against Finland, and considers that they should prepare better “mentally” for the start of the game.

“We all thought that we were going to learn from what happened against Finland and the goal in the first few minutes, but we made a mistake again in minute 3. I hope this will help us for the future. Mentally we all have to prepare ourselves to see how we have to start the game. The next 30 minutes are perhaps the best we’ve ever had”, he declared at a press conference.

As happened against the Finns, an error in the ball out of the goalkeeper Sandra Paños cost the first German goal. “I was prepared to start in one way, but an error penalizes you for the rest of the game. Then Paños has faced it well. She is whole, these are things that happen in football. Then, in a corner there is another defensive error. In the second half yes, we expected a little more reaction, but we played a serious, consistent game. Now we have to recover to play against Denmark, we are playing for the quarterfinals”, he said.

Despite everything, the coach from Madrid was “proud and satisfied” with the work of his players on the pitch. “They were angry because they wanted to win this game, except for those two mistakes, they deserved more. It’s time to recover, raise morale. Nothing has been decided. We have to move forward with the game against Denmark. I’m convinced that all that anger they had they are going to convert it into positive energy to recover,” he said.

“On the one hand there is the result and on the other, what we have seen on the field, the performance of the players and the game. With regard to the latter, I am satisfied, but at this level two punctual errors penalize you, and more against a selection like Germany. We have had our moments of play and our chances, we have generated more than them but we have not scored them”, he continued.

About the Germans, he assured that “they greatly optimize their chances”. “We have doubled them on occasions, we have generated more, we have had possession, but we have not had that luck. The team has to be calm because they have done what they have been asked to do. “, he indicated.

Finally, Vilda revealed the strengths that they like the most about the German team. “We would love to have Germany’s competitive level and their way of optimizing their chances. We have no choice but to look ahead. We come out of these games better because we gain experience,” she concluded.
