MADRID, 21 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The American tennis player Venus Williams has received an invitation this Wednesday, at 43 years old, to play Wimbledon, the third ‘Grand Slam’ of the season and a tournament that is played on the grass of the All England Club, which has also announced the ‘wild cards’ ‘ by the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina and the Belgian David Goffin.

The five-time Wimbledon champion, 43 years old and current number 697 in the WTA ranking, has not played the Wimbledon singles draw since 2021, although last year she did participate in the tournament’s doubles. Now, she will return to the British tournament, while she is now playing the Birmingham tournament, where she defeated the Italian Camila Giorgi in her debut in a duel that lasted more than three hours, her first victory over a ‘top 50 ‘ since 2019.

Wimbledon delivered 10 ‘wild cards’ for the individual draw, among which is the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who missed the tournament last year due to her pregnancy. She reached the semifinals at the All England Club in 2021 and reached the shortfinals of Roland Garros this year in her first Grand Slam since she gave birth.

The British Jodie Burrage, Harriet Dart, Katie Swan and Heather Watson have also received invitations, as have tennis players Ryan Peniston, Arthur Fery, Jan Choinski, George Loffhagen and Belgian David Goffin, number 124 in the world. In 2022, he lost in the quarterfinals in five sets to Britain’s Cameron Norrie.
