Van’t Schip resigns as Greece coach

John van’t Schip announced on Friday his resignation as coach of Greece, which he could not qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. The former Ajax and Genoa player, currently a coach, had a contract until December 31 but is leaving before due to discrepancies with the leaders of the Football Federation of Greece.

Van’t Schip, 57, said his decision to leave was due to the Hellenic Federation misrepresenting the issue of whether the Dutch manager renewed or not. He had been in office since 2019.

“We had had conversations, but the Federation took so long to make a decision that I felt it was time to move on to something else,” said Van’t Schip, adding: “Our vision of football is different. For things to go well everyone has to be on the same page. “

Van’t Schip’s record as Greece coach was 11 wins, 9 draws and 6 losses. In the qualifying phase for the World Cup, Greece was 3rd, after Spain (first in the group and classified for the World Cup) and Sweden (to the play-offs).
