Ukraine turns to CAS for defeat to Switzerland

The Federation of Ukraine (UAF) has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) the decision of the UEFA of giving up the last match of the group stage of the League of Nations against Switzerland, which was not played on the scheduled date last month due to COVID-19 infections in the Ukrainian team.

The CAS confirmed this Friday that the UAF requests in your appeal that the decision of the UEFA and that the match be rescheduled or that the decision to declare him the loser be canceled and that the result of the match be decided by a draw carried out by UEFA.

The UAF filed an appeal to the CAS against the UEFA and the Swiss Football Association (SFA) following the decision of the Appellate Body of the UEFA, on November 25, which declared Ukraine the 3-0 loser of the match to be played in Lucerne on the 17th of last month.

The organ of the UEFA made its decision by holding Ukraine responsible for the clash not taking place in accordance with the special rules applicable to the group stage of the League of Nations 2020-21.

On the day of the match, the Lucerne health authorities decided that the entire delegation of the Ukrainian team should remain in quarantine for confirmed COVID-19 cases and the match could not be played as planned.

As a consequence of that defeat Ukraine was relegated from category in the competition. The Ukrainian team was part of group 4 of League A, in which Spain finished in first position and qualified to fight for the title next year in the finals.

Germany finished second, Switzerland in third and Ukraine in fourth place, for which he was relegated to League B.

The CAS announced that in the next few days a group of arbitrators will be appointed for the procedure that is underway, in which the parties have begun to exchange written documentation.
