UEFA revolutionizes club and national team football

The national team soccer will return in September with the League of Nations. UEFA does not want to give up its tournament and is ready to make room for it in the calendar, also with a novel formula as it will be used in the Champions League and in the Europa League. In principle, its Executive Committee will approve this Wednesday three international selection windows between the next months of September and December. In that period, Spain will play eight games, six from the League of Nations (in two ten-day windows and three round-trip clashes with Germany, Ukraine and Switzerland) and two friendlies still to be specified. The first of those matches will be against the German team on September 3

On the other hand, as this newspaper announced last 10 days, UEFA already has a plan to complete the Champions League, a plan that its Executive Committee must ratify this Wednesday. Lisbon is the city chosen to organize a 'Final to Eight' that will be played behind closed doors by teams that make it past the round of 16. The tournament will return on August 8 with the remaining matches of that knockout phase, including Manchester City-Real Madrid and Barça-Naples. Both the Catalan and English clubs prefer to play in their stadiums and not in a neutral venue, as UEFA has proposed.. The other Spanish representative in the European Cup, Atlético is already classified for this new format after eliminating Liverpool.

The draft of the program contemplates that the four matches remaining to be disputed in the round of 16 will be played on the weekend of August 8. The eight teams qualified for the quarterfinals must arrive in Lisbon to start the knockout series between August 12-15. There will be seven matches (semifinals 18 and 19) to all or nothing that will be played in the José Alvalade and Da Luz stadiums, which will receive the final on Sunday, August 23.

Refering to Europa League (EL) is working on an emergency plan so that it can be concluded in the same way, in a single match and with direct eliminations. Poland's headquarters would be changed to Germany. Frankfurt and Mainz are the favorite cities. It would restart on August 5-6 with the dispute of the matches between Getafe and Sevilla with Inter and Roma. The 'Final to Eight' of the EL would be from August 15.

UEFA will also confirm the stadiums of San Mamés and Anoeta for the women's Champions League, and Hungary as the host country of the European Super Cup, whose next edition will be on September 24 in Budapest.
