UEFA has called urgently, via telematics, this Monday afternoon to its Executive Committee in order to expand the measures against Russia for the invasion of Ukraine, according to the sources consulted by this newspaper. Ceferin has called his main collaborators, among whom is the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubialesand has summoned them to discuss the situation starting at 6:30 p.m.
The FIFA Management Committee, which met yesterday Sunday under the presidency of Infantino, has already granted freedom to its six continental or subcontinental federations to act accordingly. In this regard, and according to the same sources, UEFA could exclude Spartak Moscow this afternoon, the only Russian team still in contention in European competitions, which was going to play the Europa League round of 16 against Leipzig in March.
The decisions about selections, both the participation of Russia in the play-off for the World Cup in Qatar and that of the women’s team in the European Championship in England of next summer, are issues that FIFA must take up, which for now has ordered, with the approval of UEFA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), that Russia plays its matches on a neutral field and behind closed doors, without anthem or flag, until further noticeand only under the shield of their federation.
