Two-hour long lines to visit Elcano and “Leonormanía a tope”

“Leonormania to the fullest,” a teenager said very happily on the dock of the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife for the Canarian television cameras. The training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano has been docked there since Saturday the 17th. This Monday morning the Princess of Asturias said goodbye to the Tenerife island.

It was Elcano’s first stopover, whose great five-month journey will take him to cross the Atlantic and travel along the coast of South America to the Panama Canal on a journey of 17,000 nautical miles. During this weekend, hundreds of people have come to the open days to visit the ship.

Two-hour long lines to board the brig-schooner on the second day of open doors. Since 9:00 in the morning there was already a line formed at the dock. The visitors, neighbors and tourists, took their turn and boarded one by one along the ladder or walkway. There were people with umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun while waiting. They took selfies next to the masts and next to the foremast, the mast near the bow. Very curious to tour the seven decks of the ship where the eldest daughter of Felipe VI and Letizia travels. Leonor is the great attraction that awakens that curiosity. Along with midshipman Borbón Ortiz, there are 75 fellow midshipmen and a crew made up of officers, non-commissioned officers and 130 sailors with Captain Luis Carreras-Presas do Campo. Visiting hours were from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There are those who could not access the first day and tried their luck on Sunday.

The training ship proceeds to undock and will set sail for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where it is scheduled to arrive within hours. It will be their second stopover, scheduled for this Tuesday the 21st, before leaving for Brazil.
