Turkish Super Cup suspended in Riyadh due to political tensions

MADRID, 29 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The final of the Turkish Super Cup between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray was suspended this Friday shortly before being held due to the dispute between the clubs plus the Turkish Federation with the authorities of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, venue of the match.

Both clubs and the Turkish Federation issued a joint statement confirming the postponement of the match, without a new date or venue, due to the interference of the Saudi Government with the tributes they had planned to hold before the match, according to local media reports.

At the center of the political tension was the desire of the two Istanbul teams to wear t-shirts with the image of the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, during the warm-up before the start of the match at the Al-Awwal Park stadium, in middle of the celebration of the centenary of the Republic of Turkey.

However, the Turkish statement thanked the efforts of the Federation and institutions of the host country to organize the Super Cup.
