Leonor is preparing for her big event of the year: Oviedo. The heiress will present the Princess of Asturias Awards at the Campoamor Theatre on 25 October. The day before, on Thursday 24, the eldest daughter of Felipe VI and Letizia will receive the Medal of Asturias.
Leonor will be surrounded by her parents and her sister, Sofia, who we will see just after arriving from Wales. This medal will be awarded to the princess when she came of age on October 31 last year. It so happens that when she receives the decoration, she will be almost 19. Before that, on October 12, we will see midshipman Borbón Ortiz at the National Day. It will be another step in her military training that she is carrying out at the Naval School of Marín (Pontevedra).
The princess is also following her father’s example and will receive this tribute, just as the then prince did in 1986 for his status as heir to the throne. It was the president of the Principality himself, Adrián Barbón, who informed the King in September 2023 at an audience in Zarzuela of the intention to pay tribute to Leonor.
According to Law 4/1986, of May 15, which regulates the Honours and Distinctions of the Principality, it establishes that the princes and princesses of Asturias will receive the Medal of Asturias “by their own right”. This is the highest decoration awarded in the community.
