Arganzuela will present this Wednesday, in the plenary session of the district, at the request of the councilor Cayetana Hernández de la Riva, the proposal to name athletic park of Madrid to the space occupied by the stadium Vicente Calderón, which began to be demolished in January of last year and which is practically completely demolished.
The proposal to assign said name to the space of the rojiblanco stadium and to the non-underground section, is completed with that of naming Casimiro Mahou Bierhans street to the M-30 road that runs through said area.
As reported in a statement from the City Council, both names are included in the urbanization project APE.02.27 in Nuevo Mahou-Calderón, as provided in article 4 of the Ordinance regulating the designation and labeling of roads, urban spaces, as well such as municipally owned buildings and monuments and the numbering of farms and buildings, dated April 24, 2013.
The councilor raised this proposal in the last plenary session in March, but it had to be postponed due to the health crisis, in tribute and recognition to Atlético de Madrid
and the figure of the creator of the beer brand, and is now on the agenda of the Wednesday meeting of the ordinary plenary session of the Arganuzela district, which resumed its activity without an audience for health reasons after the coronavirus crisis.
The Mahou-Calderón urban development project that is underway in the area adjacent to Madrid Río, almost 200,000 square meters in total, housed the old Vicente Calderón stadium which, after its demolition and burying of the tracks, will allocate the space to the construction of homes and green spaces. The project will be carried out in three phases and the expected time for execution is two years and ten months.
Vicente Calderón was for half a century, between October 1966 and May 2017, the home of Atlético de Madrid, that he had to move to the new and modern Wanda Metropolitano, in the San Blas-Canillejas district, which was inaugurated on September 16 of that year with a match against Málaga. The last meeting of the beloved rojiblanco coliseum was played on May 21 against Athletic.
