Elon Musk is the richest person in the world, person of the year for Time magazine last year… and also a person known for speaking on many occasions more than necessary. Above all, he seems to have a special fondness for making predictions.
And while sometimes the founder of Tesla and SpaceX gets it dead wrong, there have been cases where he has been right.
Here are some of his predictions to date.
Electrics will be the most popular cars
In 2017, the billionaire predicted that in 10 years most vehicles in the country would be electric.
However, projections from companies and research groups such as Bloomberg, Morgan Stanley and OPEC predict that this change will occur sometime between 2035 and 2040, which is between 8 and 13 years from Musk’s prediction. . Only time will tell if he is right.
Tesla will be bigger than Apple
In a tweet last year, Musk predicted that Tesla would be bigger than Apple in response to a tweet that suggested it. For now, needless to say, it is not.
Space tourism will be common
Musk believes there are opportunities in space. Last year, at a developer conference, he said: “My goal is not to send myself into space. My goal is to open space to humanity… and become a multiplanetary species.
This prediction is on the right track. In 2023, SpaceX will launch Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa into outer space.
We can sleep while we drive
Musk predicted that by 2019 self-driving systems would be reliable enough for people to sleep at the wheel.
When asked about the likelihood of taking a nap while reaching your destination, Musk replied: “I think in about two years. The real trick is not to say: “How to make it work 99.9 percent of the time?”.
Electric planes will fly
In 2017, Musk indicated that building an electric plane is not inconceivable. “Right now there are no plans to have an electric plane. We’ve got a long way to go to handle ground transportation, and it’s not inconceivable that we could do an electric plane,” he told a TED talk.
Musk warned that more work needs to be done on the energy density of batteries for an electric plane to be viable.. This idea dates back to 2009, when he first raised it. For now, despite some prototype or some test, it does not seem that it is close.
Brain chips to heal minds and store memories
In 2017, Musk said that his team at Neuralink might soon have something on the market to treat serious brain injuries.
“We’re aiming to bring something to market that helps with certain severe brain injuries (stroke, cancer injury, congenital) in about four years,” the tycoon said.
Musk has made many claims about his Neuralink brain chip, such as that it could help paraplegics walk again and “store” memories like photos. Many of them have been disproved by science.
Although Musk has said that this could happen in a period of 8 to 10 yearsexperts have doubts about the viability of the prediction, since Musk has not given many details.
Humans will colonize Mars in 2029
Earlier this month, in response to a tweet asking when humans would reach Mars, Musk predicted that it would happen in 2029.
However, this is not the first time that Musk looks favorably on Mars. Back in 2016, he revealed a plan to establish a human settlement on the planet. According to statements to National Geographic, he believed that it is possible to transport people between Earth and Mars and declared: “It is not about the whole world moving to Mars, it is about becoming multiplanetary”, at the International Astronautical Congress.
By 2060, it suggests a million humans could be living on Mars. We will see.
