The United States wins the medal count again, albeit at the last minute, in Paris 2024

MADRID, 11 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United States Olympic delegation was the best at the Paris 2024 Games, with 40 golds, 44 silvers and 42 bronzes, a total of 126 medals with which it far surpassed the rest of the countries, although in golds, which count in the classification, it tied at the last minute thanks to the women’s basketball team.

The North American country won the last gold at stake in Paris 2024, that of the women’s ‘Dream Team’, which achieved its eighth consecutive title. A legendary team that, however, this time had to suffer against France until the final buzzer. Even by centimeters, since Gaby Williams scored the last basket but stepped on the three-point line and it was not enough for the host country to tie the score at 67-66.

This is how the United States won its 40th gold medal, the country that has dominated the medal table at the Olympic Games for the fourth consecutive year. On the last day of competition this Sunday, the USA Team also won the gold in track cycling by Jennifer Valente. Thus, the Americans tied China in gold medals with fewer medals of the other colors and in total.

The two giants’ duel lasted until the final day, with China edging closer to its own victory, which it has not achieved since Beijing 2008, with Li Wenwen’s gold in weightlifting. The USA let the volleyball slip away, but Valente gave back the Yankees’ chances, taking advantage by centimetres and at the final whistle at the Arena Bercy.

The Chinese Olympic team finished second in the Paris 2024 medal table with 40 golds, 27 silvers and 24 bronzes, for a total of 91. Meanwhile, Japan rounded out the podium with 20/12/13, 45 medals. France, fifth, is the first European country in the ranking, with 16 golds, 26 silvers and 22 bronzes, and Spain finished fifteenth with 5/4/9 and 18 in total, one more than in Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
